According to Dienstfrey, the mind can be trained to alter body responses and processes to promote healing and good health. In recounting seven investigations that show how the mind influences the body, he summarizes the major research on type A behavior, the relaxation response, biofeedback, psychoneuroimmunology, neuropeptides, hypnosis, and imagery. Carefully distinguishing between a "mind" that unconsciously affects the body and a mind that purposefully directs change, Dienstfrey suggests that future research needs to focus on this "aware" mind. This short, yet comprehensive and highly readable survey is an excellent choice for public libraries.
