Shelved in Case 0. Allen Ginsberg was born in 1926 in Newark, New Jersey. He was a poet, essayist, and activist, most well known for his role in the Beat Generation, a literary movement of the 1950s. Ginsberg's work was bold and controversial, making him a major figure in postwar American literature. He passed away in 1997 in New York City. "Howl" was published in 1956 and was regarded as Ginsberg's breakthrough poem. Howl was partially influenced by his relationship with his mother, Naomi Levy, who struggled with schizophrenia and spent much of her life in psychiatric hospitals. Howl also received widespread publicity when it was banned for obscenity. However, the ban was eventually lifted, cementing Howl's place in the canon of American literature. 1389529.
