A new edition of the world’s most prestigious reference atlas, featuring 250 pages of updated detailed mapping and a specially commissioned 72 page introductory section presenting a comprehensive picture of the world today.
The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World is universally recognised as the world's most prestigious and authoritative reference atlas. Since it's first edition in 1967 it has sold over 1 million copies. Its detailed and beautifully created mapping represent the perfect blend of tradition, authority and style which set this atlas apart.
The 10th edition, published in 1999, was the first completely new edition of the atlas since its introduction. Now this fully revised 11th edition brings all the reference maps and detailed thematic information completely up to date.
The preliminary section is introduced by unique satellite images of the continents and continues with a series of maps, images, photographs and graphics which present a detailed picture of today's physical world and man's interaction with it. The section also includes an account of the evolution of world maps and of significant developments in cartography, and concludes with detailed geographical information on the world's physical features and the world's states and territories.
The reference maps, produced in the distinctive and authoritative Times style, present the most accurate and up-to-date representation of our knowledge of the earth today. The areas shown, and the scale and map projection of each plate, have been specifically chosen to give the best representation of each geographical area. The maps now include a brand new map of the world’s physical features.
The gazetteer-index to over 200,000 place names and geographical features illustrates the unique scope of the atlas. It includes full cross-referencing with alternative and former names, geographical coordinates of every settlement shown on the maps, and a comprehensive glossary of geographical terms.
The atlas includes:
o 72 page introductory section
o 250 pages of reference maps of continents, countries and oceans
o 224 page gazetteer index to over 200,000 place names and geographical features

This wonderful atlas is the eleventh edition, published in 2003. This eleventh edition of the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World is the latest edition of a title which has steadily evolved since the The Times first published a world atlas in 1895. That atlas was The Times Atlas, a new edition of the Cassell Universal Atlas itself an English edition of Andree's, Allgemeiner Handatlas, first published in German in 1880 by Verlag von Velhagen & Klasing of Bielefeld and Leipzig. The Atlas contained 118 pages of maps, which half referred to Europe. To replace that title, The Times Survey Atlas was commissioned from John Bartholomew & Son, the renowned Edinburgh cartographers. Preparation and planning took fifteen years and it was published in 1921. Potentially the most contentious areas of world atlas cartography are those of place names and international boundaries. Times atlases have gained a reputation for their accuracy in depicting these. In any areas of conflict, the atlas aims to represent the situation as it exists on the ground at the time of going to press. Policies on place names and boundaries are explained in the Introduction to the Atlas on page ii. The index, which contains over 200,000 place names, includes information on former and alternative names, geographical coordinates in degrees and minutes- a feature no other atlas includes to such an extent. The introductory section contains unique continental satellite images which provide a dramatic view of each continent as seen from space. Other images, including views of the Universe from the Hubble telescope, together with thematic maps, photographs, graphics and contributions from experts in many fields, illustrate a range of topics on the physical aspects of the Earth, and demographic and economic issues. Together, these present an overview of our knowledge of the natural world and man's interaction with it. All statistical information within this section has been fully revised. While retaining the authority and tradition for which Times Atlas are widely renowned, this Eleventh Edition of The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World uses technology never envisaged by the cartographers who produced the earliest editions. In doing so it presents the most comprehensive portrayal of the world available in any reference atlas. Artikel-Nr. 1762
