In the First Circle depicts the lives of the occupants of a sharashka (a research and development bureau made of GULAG inmates) located in the Moscow suburbs. This novel is highly autobiographical. Many of the prisoners (zeks) are technicians or academics who have been arrested under Article 58 of the RSFSR Penal Code in Joseph Stalin's purges following the Second World War. Unlike inhabitants of other gulag labor camps, the sharashka zeks were adequately fed and enjoyed good working conditions; however, if they found disfavor with the authorities, they could be instantly shipped to Siberia. The title is an allusion to Dante's first circle, or limbo of Hell in The Divine Comedy, wherein the philosophers of Greece, and other virtuous pagans, live in a walled green garden. They are unable to enter Heaven, as they were born before Christ, but enjoy a small space of relative freedom in the heart of Hell. Artikel-Nr. 66ab7e69-e7e2-480b-ac28-d3eb32bf0039

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Reprint. Paperback fep removrd This book is a story about human nature and a scrupulously exact description of a historical period. If nothing had changed in Russia since Stalin's death, Solzhenitsyn would be either still in prison or dead. But no country can go through a period of such extremes of both suffering and moral distintegration without being affected by it for a long time to come. The author's analysis does not make Soviet policy predictable but it does make it explicable. Paperback. Zustand: Good. 700 pages. Cover worn. text tanned Reviews This first uncensored translation of what many consider Solzhenitsyn 's masterpiece shows the Nobel laureate treading deeply into the logic of Soviet Russia's gulag, if not deeply enough into the minds of his characters. A quest to discover the identity of a rogue Russian diplomat serves as Solzhenitsyn's sp ringboard for a tour of Russia's immense gulag system, slipping from prisoner to jailer to anguished wife (and even detouring through a weary Stalin) to briefly examine the lives of more than 60 significant characters. Each short chapter co ntributes to a vast mosaic of philosophies and moral dilemmas that, taken togeth er, form a panorama of a Russia gripped by Stalinist terror. Unfortunately, none of the characters steps out from the shadow of the political to become a full-f ledged individual; the result is an oddly skewed work, a highly journalistic nov el that hits the political and material realities of post-WWII Russia, but that subsumes humanity beneath its ideas. It's more valuable as testimony than as lit erature, thanks largely to Solzhenitsyn's insight into one of the great abominat ions of the 20th century. (Oct.) Copyright 2009 Reed Business Information.
