Remaining interior with minor signs of wear.; Japan has since the Second World War challenged the industrial giants of the West on their own ground with triumphant success. Yet she remains a profoundly traditional - even feudal-society. The paradox is not simply that these two very different attitudes coexist in Modern Japan: it is rather that the one actually grows out of the other. Japan has become a mighty industrial power largely because of her traditional values and disciplines. Michael Macintyre has taken his camera in search of the evidence of Japanese tradition, and has found it in a variety of fascinating, and sometimes unexpected, places. In the heart of this modern industrial society the shrine festivals flourish, with their parades of samurai and courtiers. The age-old martial arts and the cult of the sword live on alongside the gentler pursuits of the tea ceremony and flower arrangement. The theatre of Noh, Kabuki and Bunraku continue their ancient traditions, and the geishas of Kyoto, though they are becoming an endangered species, survive precariously. Even the tattooed gangsters who manage the 'love hotels' of modern Japan, and who run protection rackets, can be seen as distant inheritors of a samurai tradition of unquestioning loyalty to the leader. This legacy of tradition which pervades the whole of modern Japan has roots in the remotest past; but it was the more recent Edo period (1603-1868) which established feudalism, with its rigidly defined social hierarchies, during long years when Japan was at peace and secluded from outside influences. It was during this period that the Shoguns, military dictators ruling under the notional authority of the Emperor, codified behaviour appropriate to each class, and thus provided a framework which has survived Japan's emergence into the modern world. The Shogun Inheritance, based on the major BBC television series of the same title, reveals in photographs of great visual beauty how an uniquely Japanese blending of Western techniques and indigenous social organisation has produced 'Japanese spirit with Western technology'.
