Citizen soldiers from diverse backgrounds share their compelling stories of service in the Philippines, detailing their recruitment, military campaigns, and personal experiences, while highlighting the camaraderie with fellow troops during a pivotal time in history. The 2nd Oregon Volunteer Regiment chronicles the journey of these citizen soldiers, drawn from the Oregon National Guard, who fought valiantly during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection from 1898 to 1899. This book delves into their experiences through letters home, newspaper articles, military records, and other historical documents, providing a vivid portrayal of their lives. From the moment of recruitment, the narrative follows the regiment across the ocean to the Philippines, where they faced the realities of war. Readers will gain insight into the military situation upon their arrival, their crucial role in the capture of Manila, and their responsibilities as Provosts during the occupation. The book presents a dual perspective on their military campaigns against the Filipino Army, combining official military accounts with personal recollections that bring their experiences to life. While the focus remains on the Second Oregon Volunteers, the book also highlights the experiences of the Thirteenth Minnesota, who fought alongside them. Their shared struggles and triumphs foster a sense of unity and brotherhood that transcends individual regiments. The narrative culminates with the retirement of their regimental flag, marking the end of their military service and their transition back to civilian life.
