Since the skyscraper's humble beginnings as a 10-story building in Chicago, more than 100 years ago, the super-tall building has been a source of wonder for the layman, and of inspiration, innovation, and fierce competition for architects, engineers, contractors, and the countless others involved with the complex challenge of constructing increasingly higher buildings. Originally built predominantly as stand-alone office buildings, super-tall skyscrapers have evolved into vertical cities, which are often part of a larger urban plan, with most new examples incorporating a mix of uses including residential, hotel, retail, entertainment, and leisure facilities.
