Joel Gallant, MD, MPH, is Medical Director of Specialty Services at Southwest CARE Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He also has faculty appointments at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Dr. Gallant is an infectious disease specialist with expertise in HIV infection and AIDS. He received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, completed his internal medicine training at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, and his infectious disease fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was on the full-time faculty for 21 years. In Santa Fe, he cares for patients and conducts research on new treatments for HIV and hepatitis C. He has served as the Chair of the HIV Medicine Association, has been on the Governing Council of the International AIDS Society, and is on the Board of Directors and the antiretroviral guidelines panel of the International Antiviral Society-USA. He is editor of The Hopkins HIV Guide, on online guide for clinicians (www.hopkinsguides.com/hopkins/ub), and answers questions on HIV on his blog (www.hivforum.tumblr.com). Dr. Gallant, who received the HIV Clinical Education Award from the HIV Medicine Association in 2006, is internationally recognized for his ability to communicate new research developments and treatment strategies to professional and lay audiences.'
