What makes a trail a classic hike? "Outstanding scenery," says Doug Lorain, "especially good views." Add in mountain lakes and waterfalls. For access to the magnificent Table Lake area try the nearby (but longer) Cabot Lake Trail, which is still open and maintained by the Forest Service.
