During the seventeenth century, the first hundred years of the 'modern' period, artillery became an ever-important part of warfare across the world. Ever-more powerful weapons were developed and a series of improvements such as standardisation of calibres were implemented. New weapons such as the mortar were added to artillery units, along with many other innovations. These aspects are all examined in this work which sets out to explain how, in this period, the art of gunnery became an exact science on land and at sea.

John Norris acquired his interest in artillery while serving in the British Army. He is a freelance writer and photographer specializing in military subjects, especially the history of weaponry.
