Schutzumschlag leicht berieben, leichte Randläsuren am Buchrücken, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Vorsatz, die ersten Seiten weisen Knicke auf und sind ungleichmäßig / dust jacket slightly rubbed, light edgewear to spine, pencil annotation on endpaper, first few pages have creases and are irregular. - Europe s divergence from America, on issues like war with Iraq and trade competition, is becoming increasingly ill-tempered. With the Euro flourishing and a European defence force a real prospect, Europe is now a recognizable political entity on the world scene. A population of over 450 million and the world s largest economy have already turned the EU into a super-power, but it is now on the verge of being a super-state. Stephen Haseler examines why the new European super-state has emerged: monetary union has produced what may be the world s most stable currency; its dynamic sense of self-interest has created the world s largest trading bloc; its increasingly integrated legal system is working; in most areas, (with the spectacular exception of Iraq) common interests have resulted in a common diplomacy; and Core Europe (the Franco-German axis) is not only acting as a magnet for deeper European unity but also - with Britain - as a troika which is pioneering the long sought-after European army . This process will inevitably create a rival to the United States. Haseler uses his unique understanding of Washington think-tank politics to describe how America s political elites have reacted to the growing Atlantic crisis. He describes how many in America now see a United Europe as a potential adversary and how an anti-European sentiment is being engineered and fostered in Washington. He suggests that from now on, no matter the administration, Washington will attempt to maintain its global supremacy by seeking to divide and rule Europe. Haseler further argues, controversially, that the break-up of NATO is now both inevitable and necessary. Europeans will accept America as a partner, but no longer as the leader of the free world. The fact that both Europeans and Americans now realise they have different interests around the world - from the Middle East and Islamic world through to China - is bound to be reflected in foreign and defence policies. / Contents Preface Introduction Europe's Hour Chapter 1 Europe and the American Empire From Ascendancy to Subordination Chapter 2 Europe Says 'No' September 11th, Iraq and the Ruptured Alliance Chapter 3 The Making of a Superpower The Euro and Beyond?
