Rupert Roopnaraine returned to Guyana from an academic post in the USA to join the Working People's Alliance in 1977, and quickly became one of the joint leaders of the party with Walter Rodney and others - a position he has held to this day. He has been a membr of the Guyanese parliament for many years, with a reputation for the incorruptible representation of people across all racial groups. He was the prime ministerial candidate for the opposition coalition, APNU, at the last elections.
