This book offers an exploration of possibilities for evangelisation in China using a "road less traveled" that does not compromise the teachings of the Church but takes a Christ-centered but pragmatic approach, with an eye toward Chinese religious history and current sensibilities. It includes detailed historical analysis and reflections on current challenges and opportunities, particularly in light of documents from recent popes. Yan gives a Chinese Christian perspective on a complicated subject that is often misunderstood by Catholics and often not historically contextualised by either by Chinese or Christian observers, covering both the history of Christianity in China and the complicated current situation for missioners and evangelisation efforts. It makes use of documents unavailable to previous authors on this topic (including Pope Benedict's letter to the Chinese church), and also treats in careful detail the specific pitfalls and opportunities facing the church in China in evangelisation efforts.

Kin Sheung Chiaretto Yan lives in Shanghai. He holds a doctorate in Missiology from Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and a Master's degree in Oriental Religions and Cultures from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. His primary areas of research are interdisciplinary approaches to the religions and cultures of Asia.
