Buchbeschreibung Zustand: Gut. First Edition. 247 S.; illustriert; gr.-8°. Gutes Ex. - Englisch. // INHALT : About the Authors -- Foreword -- W Nelson McCoy Pottery -- J W McCoy Pottery -- Catalogue reprint -- Marks of the Pottery -- Lines of Manufacture -- Biography -- Nelson McCoy Pottery -- Marks of the Pottery -- Lines of Manufacture -- Cookie Jars, Descriptions and -- Dates of Manufacture -- Current Values -- Color Album of Pottery -- Bibliography. // The first McCoy pottery was established in 1848 in Putman, Ohio - which was later to become a part of Zanesville - by W. Nelson McCoy and W. F. McCoy, his uncle. Using the most primitive of methods and materials, they none the less produced stoneware crocks and jars in such quantities that they not only supplied the local market, but transported loads of ware down the river as well. On his boat in addition to his pottery, he carried a small stock of items such as the isolated farm wives were apt to have need of. During one such journey, McCoy's raft hit a sand bar in the Mississippi River and capsized . . . everything was lost! But when the river was more successfully executed, he found no difficulty in selling his merchandise. Lotz and Sons, of New Orleans, who continued in business there for over a century, were always eager to buy McCoy Pottery! His mission completed, McCoy would sell his raft, and with some of his earnings, book passage back up the river to his home. The hardships endured by those early potters are hard for us who have been nurtured in an era of mechanization to even imagine. Stoneware clays required a substantial kiln due to the high temperatures necessary for firing. Fire wood had to be cut, clay had to be dug and processed . molds had to be made, and machinery fashioned by hand. The business of marketing could begin only after Spring thaws. From October until late April, roads were impassable. But inside the pottery, work was in full swing, stockpiling a supply of ware for later delivery. Although top quality stoneware clay was theirs for the digging, it required a certain amount of processing to make it of a uniform consistency. Lumps were ground up, pebbles and foreign objects removed, and enough water added to form a pliable, workable material. After the ware was formed by hand turning or jiggering on the wheel, it was set on long boards to dry, then transferred to the kiln for firing. The kilns were fired with cord wood, and the smell of wood smoke clinging to his clothing often served to identify a man as a potter! The glaze was produced either by an application of slip clay, which when fired melted to form a smooth, glossy surface, or simply by common salt, which was heated and thrown into the kiln at maximum temperature. The salt would instantly form a vapor that would adhere to the stoneware, leaving a smooth, grey-white surface. This salt glazed stoneware was often decorated by hand with cobalt - one of the few minerals capable of withstanding the intense heat of the kiln. Streaks and daubs of color and simple floral outlines were used, but the most popular motif was the bird - hence the name "Blue Bird" pottery. We don't know how long this pottery continued to produce, nor how much of this early stoneware survived. More than likely most of it was not marked . . . the rare jars that were, bear these stenciled letters: W. F. McCoy, Wholesale dealer in stoneware, Zanesville, Ohio, 1848. (See page 49) W. Nelson McCoy was later elected mayor of Zanesville, and is reported to have been the first Odd Fellow in the city.
