Travelled widely in Europe. In 1948 joined the Diplomatic service and worked as Director of Information at Washington, New York, Tokyo and London. In 1958 went back to Rome as adviser to the Director-Genral of F.A.O. of the U.N. His wife Leela Majumdar died in 1974. Then lived in Santiniketan, West Bengal. His poems are existentialist in inspiration but do not follow set doctrinaire paths. Finds the transcendental faith of Kierkegaard and the Christian mysticism of Maritain beyond his reach and does not share the atheism of Heidegger and Sartre
