He had early in his adult life spent some time at a hospital toying with the idea of becoming a doctor, but his first novel, "Liza of Lambeth", published in 1897, was such a success he decided to become a full-time writer. "Of Human Bondage" was his first major work/success and four years later came publication of "The Moon and Sixpence" which solidified his reputation as a writer of novels and the success of his "The Trembling of a Leaf: Little Stories of the South Sea Islands" in 1921 expanded his fame into the world of short stories. In 1927 Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965. (Information from the FantasticFiction UK website. The books are in virtually pristine condition.
