Neuer, Roni and Herbert Libertson: UKIYO-E 250 YEARS OF JAPANESE ART, New York Mayflower Books (1978)
Ukiyo-e woodcuts were a vivid witness to everyday life in Japan between the 17th and 19th centuries. A biographical background of the main artists behind ukiyo-e is given by Susugu Yoshida. These woodcut prints started out as black and white prints used for advertisement and evolved into beautifully rendered decorations. Erotic ukiyo-e were banned from shop windows, but because of their popularity were created in secret and became even more elaborate. Edges lightly worn with mild rubbing at ends of spine and corners of volume.
4to, cloth, dust jacket. (vi), 390 pages.
