Rare chapbook of the "Patient Helena", published by the famous publishing house of schoolbooks and chapbooks, De Lange at Deventer. In the Northern Netherlands the story of "Helena of Constantinople" was mostly published separately, whereas in the Southern Netherlands the story was mostly published as part of a larger collection of tales about women characters, under the title "Vrouwen Peerle" (Female Pearls). The story was based on the French by Jehan Wauquelin, dating from 1448. The book is printed in Gothic type, and the woodcuts obviously came from various sources, probably chosen at random from De Lange's large stock of woodblocks.
Used but acceptable copy of a rare chapbook, with old owner's ms. entry: Berendt Spijkerbosch on title and last leaf.- (Frayed at edges; last leaf sl. dam.; large brown stain at corners of 4 lvs.; sl. browned throughout).

Dutch chapbook containing the popular adaptation of the French romance of chivalry. The book is nicely illustrated with popular woodcuts showing knights duelling, battle scenes, executions, musicians playing, etc. As usual they were taken at random from old stock. A comical example of the arbitrariness by which the woodcuts for this kind of books were chosen is offered by the woodcut on title of the present chapbook: it shows the Dutch Prince of Orange, Frederik Hendrik, at the siege of 's-Hertogenbosch.
Good copy.
