Wohl an den Diplomaten und Politiker George Stepney (1663-1707) über eine Debatte im House of Commons betreffend ein Darlehen an John Churchill, den Herzog von Marlborough, und seine Erben im Gefolge der Schlacht bei Ramillies, eine der bedeutendsten Schlachten im Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg. Noch am Tag der Debatte schreibt Addison, der Antrag sei von Annesley, Ward, Caesar und Sir Willam Vevian abgelehnt worden: "One said this was showing no honour to His Grace but to a posterity that he was not concern'd in. Casar among other Expressions hoped ye Duke tho he had bin Victorious over the Enemy woud not think of being so over a House of Commons: w[hi]ch was said in pursuance to a Motion made by some of the Craftier sort that woud not oppose the proposition directly but turn it off by a Side-wind pretending that it being a money affaire it shoud be refer'd to a Committee of the whole House w[hi]ch in all probability woud have defeated the whole affaire [...]". - Nach den überaus erfolgreichen Schlachten Marlboroughs der Jahre 1704-06 wurden der Herzog und Stepney die ersten englischen Regenten der anglo-niederländischen Gemeinherrschaft in Südholland. Stepney wurde am 26. Mai, nach der Schlacht von Ramillies, in Marlboroughs Namen offizieller Regent des Reichsfürstentums Mindelheim. Nach Marlboroughs Rückkehr nach London im November bewilligte das Parlament, wie Addison schreibt, ihm und seinen Erben ein ewiges Darlehen von "5,000 pound p/ annum out of ye Post-Office for-Ever on His Grace + Heirs". - Spuren alter Faltung; stellenweise unbedeutend gebräunt. Das Gegenblatt mit alter Kurzbeschreibung verso, auf Trägerpapier aufgezogen. Kleiner Einriß und Klebstelle am oberen Bug. Datierung "Jan. 7th 1706" nach dem (von den Normannen eingeführten) Annuntiationsstil (mos anglicanus): Bis 1752 galt in England der 25. März als Jahresbeginn.
