New. * Paracelsus [1493-1541] was the German-Swiss physician and alchemist who established the role of chemistry in medicine. He wrote the best clinical description of syphilis available in 1530 and was the first to connect goiter with minerals, especially lead, in drinking water. John Ferguson [1837-1916], the Regius Professor of Chemistry at Glasgow University, is well known among scholars for the Bibliotheca Chemica (1906), a bibliographical survey of alchemical books. Original copies of the Bibliographica Paracelsica are quite rare. Originally published in six parts from 1877 to 1896, only 100 to 150 copies were printed.
