Nicely illustrated educational book, containing short biographies of famous people in the fields of arts and sciences, intended as models for children. Present are the lives of the philosopher Pierre la Ramee or Ramus, with his portrait showing him as a young worker reading at night in the library of his employer, of the poet Dirk Volkertsz. Coornhert, the painter Pietro of Cordona, the scientist Viviani, the architect Roubo, the American historical painter and builder of a steamship Robert Fulton, the inventor of the French weaving-loom Joseph Jacquard, and the famous botanist Poiteau. The publisher G.B. van Goor was active at Gouda from 1839 to 1868.
