Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Climate change is here. This book moves beyond misery and misunderstanding, taking a literary approach to the debate. Below Freezing is a unique assemblage of scientific fact, newspaper reports, and excerpts from novels, short stories, nonfiction, history, creative nonfiction, and poetry-a commonplace book for our era of altering climate. This polyphony of voices functions as an oratorio, shifting from chorus to solo and back to chorus. An unconventional and brilliant book, Below Freezing is both timely and pertinent-an original gaze at this melting ball we call home. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Alice Lindsay Price, a devoted naturalist, has for the past twenty years joined the scientific pursuit of avian scholarship to her lifelong passions of painting, writing, and literature. Here, she brings into focus the wealth of human lore, both scientific and cultural, to portray the survival into the twenty-first century of the two North American Crane species, the Sandhill and the Whooping Crane. Her comprehensive display of facts and lore interwoven into her own observations in the field -- as well as those of scientists and naturalists working to save the species from extinction -- remind us how essential is our awareness of the natural world. The book is illuminated with illustrations and photographs by the author, and with a wide assortment of historical images from Cretan bird goddess to petroglyphs to Audubon. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Gertrudis Barcelo was born at the turn of the nineteenth century in the Bavispe valley of east central Sonora, Mexico. Young Gertrudis, who would later achieve fame under the name "Tules," discovered how to manipulate men, reading their body language and analyzing their gambling habits. This power, coupled with a strong-willed and enterprising nature, led Dona Tules to her legendary role as a shrewd and notorious gambling queen and astute businesswoman. Throughout the 1830s and 1840s, her monte dealings and entertainment houses became legendary throughout the southern Rocky Mountain region. Dona Tules's daring behavior attracted the condemnation of many puritanical Anglo travelers along the Santa Fe Trail. Demonized by later historians, Dona Tules has predominately been portrayed as little more than a caricature of an Old West madam and cardsharp, eluding serious historical study until now. Mary J. Straw Cook sifts through the notoriety to illustrate the significant role Dona Tules played in New Mexico history as the American era was about to begin. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Brought to Spain in the thirteenth century by Islamic artisans, the enamelled earthenware known as mayolica is decorated with a lead glaze to which tin oxide is added to create an opaque white surface. By the fifteenth century, several areas in Spain were well known throughout Europe for the quality of these ceramics, and with Spain's expansion into the New World the mayolica tradition came into Mexico. There it underwent further changes, notably the use of indigenous design motifs and patterns inspired by Chinese porcelain. Over the next three centuries, the potters of New Spain produced ceramics characterised by a distinctive mestizo aesthetic. This tradition continues today in both Mexico and Spain. Assembled in connection with a major exhibition at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, this book moves discussion of mayolica beyond its stylistic merits in order to understand it in historic and cultural context. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
