Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good dj. First Edition. (price-clipped) [light shelfwear to bottom edge, slight bumping to bottom corners; jacket lightly soiled, with small tears and minor paper loss at a couple of corners, shallow chipping along top edge, a bit of fading at spine]. This novel deals with "a sensitive and educated Japanese soldier's personal Gethsemane -- his unwilling brutalization in a cause which held no illusions for him, and his regeneration through his own essential decency and contact with a kindly and free enemy people" -- certainly an unusual subject and theme for a novel written in the midst of World War II. (Although the action itself predates Pearl Harbor: it concerns a fairly Westernized young Japanese man who's conscripted for service in the Japanese war against China, and the jacket blurb remarks on the author's "portrayal of the soul sickness engendered by the Japanese cult of war.".

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good- dj. Illustrated by (dj) John O'Hara Cosgrave II (illustrator). First Edition. [slight fraying to cloth at base of spine, a bit of dust-soiling to top page edges; jacket edgeworn, small tears at several corners, spine faded, a few tiny tears and minor paper loss at top of spine]. First (and apparently only) novel by this Southern-born author, about a young black man who develops a fascination for a white prostitute who regularly passes through the town's "Negro quarter" as she crosses to the other side of town in search of customers. The man, Milo, is psychologically scarred from his boyhood experience of having been sent home after his mother had attempted to enroll him in an all-white school, while Vern, the woman, is dealing with the bitterness of having been abandoned by her soldier-husband, which forced her to turn to prostitution to survive.

[the book is nice and clean, with no discernible wear; the jacket is lightly scuffed, slightly faded at the spine, with a small chip at the bottom rear hinge and some creasing and edgewear along the bottom edge of the rear panel, a one-inch split at the bottom rear foldover, and a diagonal crease in the rear flap]. (The American Heritage Series) Series This volume "illuminates many aspects of the elusive 'conservatism' concerning which so much has been written, and helps to explain why it is that conservatism survives, in politics, in economics, in the social sciences, in the arts. Mr. Buckley has drawn from the works of renowned scholars and writers, and also from the works of relatively obscure men, whose contributions he nevertheless persuasively puts forward as deeply influential in the crystallization of modern conservative thought." (Advance warning: that grinding sound you will hear as you turn the pages of this book will be Mr. Buckley tossing and turning in his grave, in response to what American "conservatism" has degenerated into over the course of the last half-century.).

"Editor Michael Harrison and twenty-five other devoted Sherlockians clear the fog of late-Victorian London as they take us indeed beyond Baker Street to a firmer understanding of Holmes, Doctor Watson, the Canon, and their creator, Conan Doyle. No one here has sought to father views and significances which are not plainly apparent at the first reading of the stories, the sixty adventures." Remarkable work dedicated to the rational analysis of a type of experience ordinarily assumed to defy reason - giving an appreciative but critical view of mysticism in all its richness. He presents the large psychological question and the highly intellectual arguments of philosophers - summing up, grasping them in their strength, evaluating them critically.
