Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good- dj. Illustrated by (dj) John O'Hara Cosgrave II (illustrator). First Edition. [slight fraying to cloth at base of spine, a bit of dust-soiling to top page edges; jacket edgeworn, small tears at several corners, spine faded, a few tiny tears and minor paper loss at top of spine]. First (and apparently only) novel by this Southern-born author, about a young black man who develops a fascination for a white prostitute who regularly passes through the town's "Negro quarter" as she crosses to the other side of town in search of customers. The man, Milo, is psychologically scarred from his boyhood experience of having been sent home after his mother had attempted to enroll him in an all-white school, while Vern, the woman, is dealing with the bitterness of having been abandoned by her soldier-husband, which forced her to turn to prostitution to survive.

[tiny bump to the bottom front corner, no other significant wear, but with a previous owner's name plus date & place of purchase written in ink at the top of the half-title page; the jacket is lightly rubbed, with some very minor nicking along the top edge, and the same previous owner has (quite unnecessarily) internally reinforced all edges and folds with clear tape (completely invisible from the outside)]. "Editor Michael Harrison and twenty-five other devoted Sherlockians clear the fog of late-Victorian London as they take us indeed beyond Baker Street to a firmer understanding of Holmes, Doctor Watson, the Canon, and their creator, Conan Doyle. No one here has sought to father views and significances which are not plainly apparent at the first reading of the stories, the sixty adventures." Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good dj. First Edition. [good solid copy, clean inside and out, very light bumping to corners; jacket shows a bit of wear and minor chipping at spine extremities, vertical crease in lower half of spine, one tiny hole in spne]. (Notable American Trials) Series "Nontechnical but factually accurate account[s] of four significant American criminal trials, the third book in this series. Covered are: The Trials of Caleb Powers and Others for Complicity in the Murder of Governor Goebel of Kentucky (1900-1907); The Trial of Albert T. Patrick for the Murder of William Marsh Rice (1902); The Trial of Frances S. Hall and Her Twin Brothers for the Murder of Eleanor Mills (1926); The Trials of Hans Max Haupt and Others for Treason, in Harboring a German Saboteur (1942-1944). Although all four cases were pretty big deals in their day, the one with the most widespread resonance was undoubtedly the Hall-Mills case, which is regarded as one of the biggest criminal-trial media events of the 1920s, and served as the inspiration for various novels, plays and films -- even, in the reckoning of one scholar, for notable characters in Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby.".

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+ dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Mike McIver (illustrator). First Edition. [light wear to cloth at extremities and bottom edges of covers, a couple of small brown spots (tea?) on top of text block; jacket shows moderate wear at edges and extremities]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "for Elena and Jack Baskin / with love in San Francisco / Cedric Belfrage / Nov 1973." The author's very personal recounting of the political climate in the U.S. during the decade and a half following World War II. As a long-time lefty (and editor since 1948 of the National Guardian, the story of which he told in a later book, "Something to Guard"), he was eventually deported in 1955 for his refusal to cooperate with HUAC and Sen. Joe McCarthy -- although, as he points out, the titular inquisition neither began nor ended with the witch-hunting career of the junior senator from Wisconsin, nor was it confined to such high-profile individuals as the Hollywood Ten, Linus Pauling, etc. "More than destroying lives it destroyed livelihoods, reputations and homes. Former Communists who repented and named names were more highly valued than people who refused to legitimize the inquisition by cooperating. The very possession of left-wing books was considered evidence of subversion. Thousands of ordinary people were victims. Besides the events surrounding the names of the Rosenbergs, Hiss and Larrimore, many less familiar names are cited here and their stories recounted." Especially interesting features in this book are the "Fever Charts," year-by-year juxtapositionings of various testimony excerpts, editorial comments, etc., which provide a vivid snapshot of the fear (and occasional absurdity) that characterized the period. And by the way -- don't make the mistake of thinking this couldn't happen again. Signed by Author.

1/4 Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st US Edition; First Printing. An attractive first American edition/first printing in Near Fine condition with lightly soiled pages in alike dust-jacket with minor edgewear and crease front flap; When Natalya Reshtovskaya and her husband, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, moved to Sanya, China in 1969, they had no idea they were embarking on a life-altering journey. Sanya was a remote, windswept fishing village on the coast of the Sea of Japan, and Aleksandr was a newly-minted writer with little hope of finding success. But Sanya was also a place of infinite possibility, and Aleksandr began to write some of his most famous works, including One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and Cancer Ward. Sanya is a warm, lyrical memoir of a remarkable marriage and a fascinating exploration of one man's struggle to find himself and his place in the world.; B & W Photographs; 8vo; 284 pages.
