Buch
Original cloth. Zustand: Sehr gut. 117 p., numerous plates. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed and stained binding, otherwise very good and clean. / Leicht beriebener und angeschmutzter Einband, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - Towards the end of the eighteenth century, Nicolai Karamzin left Russia as a young man of twenty Tour to broaden his mind by travelling through Germany, Switzerland, France and England, and wrote a fascinating epistolary account of his journey. In his first letter from London (July 1790) he said: "Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems to me that the first sight of a town gives a better and livelier effect, and one is in a better position to make some sort of judgment, than if one delays and loses the impression of the whole in a welter of detail. Fresh curiosity seizes more easily on the most important and remarkable aspects of places and their character." And he went on to give his correspondent an account of the impression London had made on him during the early days of his visit, mentioning in particular the unpretentiousness of its buildings, the cleanliness of its streets, and its quietness in comparison with Paris and Moscow. Karamzin was right. First impressions are vital; and here the visitor is in a more advantageous position than the native. London is so vast and contains such a complex of political, social, commercial, profes sional and artistic interests that the ordinary inhabitant finds willy-nilly he must build up a series of strong resistances if he is to avoid being overwhelmed by the apparently uncoordinated impressions and distractions that crowd in on him from every side. Generally speaking, it is difficult for the Cockney or the Londoner born outside the sound of Bow Bells fully to respond to the appeal of his native city. As it is the environment in which he has to live and work, he usually judges it by a set of limited and prejudiced standards. The provincial or the foreigner is likely to be less inhibited when it comes to selection, and to have a surer eye both for significant detail and the general impression. Here, the work of selection has been carried out by a friendly Swiss neighbour, whose London visits have formed an episodic part of a twentieth-century Grand. Tour embracing the main countries of the civilized world; and the eye is the undistracted lens of a camera. Rightly, Martin Hürlimann does not allow himself to be deterred by the inchoate vastness of his subject, but plunges straight into the heart of the matter. And near London s heart is always the great artery of the Thames. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine dj. First Edition. [a lovely, as-new copy, with no significant wear to book and only the lightest bit of scuffing to the rear jacket panel]. (B&W photographs, facsimile documents) "Joseph Cornell is at once a legendary yet living presence in American art. His famous boxes, with their ineffably perfect choice of elements -- the stuffed birds, the buttons and toys, the fragments of old theatrical posters, the poignant allusions to the worlds of the 19th century ballet and opera -- are some of the most recognizable signatures in all of 20th century art. This book is the first extended selection of Cornell's diaries and other written material to be published, and from his writings Cornell emerges as a deeply dedicated and conscious artist, though one whose personality was every bit as unusual as many had perceived. Cornell used his diaries as he used his boxes, to capture and preserve his passing feelings, his momentary urges, and his anguished hesitations. He was an incessant and brilliant recorder of his thoughts as he considered his art, or traveled to New York to haunt antiquarian bookstores and shops where he collected material for his boxes." ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.****.

Hardcover. Zustand: g+. First edition. Folio. [4], 205, [1]pp. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over orange cloth, with black lettering on spine. Pictorial endpapers. The Shoowa people, a small tribe from the kingdom of Kuba, now Zaire, have been designing and making embroidered textiles for hundreds of years. With their complex geometrical patterning and bold colours, these works of art were used in a variety of ways by the Shoowas, as status symbols, dowries, shrouds, religious vestments or as a type of currency. Genuine production ceased around 1905, with the result that they have become collectors' items. This remarkable work is a study of these textiles and their history. 100 designs have been selected, photographed and analyzed. Diagrams show each design's development from basic motif to complicated pattern. The history of the Shoowa people is traced and the various influences on their designs, such as prehistoric art are discussed. Moderate shelf wear on dust-jacket. Previous owners' names on front free endpaper (Frederick and Stella Krieger). DJ in overall good, binding and interior in very good condition.

4°. 166 S. mit zahlr. Abb. OLn. mit farb. illustr. OU. Koetzle 319. - Erste Ausgabe. - Der Magnum Fotograf J. A. Nachtwey (geb. - Sehr gutes Exemplar. Sprache: englisch.
