Richard Walker was one of the most influential anglers in the history of the sport. His biography is long overdue and it has taken the research and writing skills of Barrie Rickards to bring it to fruition. The book gives a remarkable overview of Dick's angling achievements and an in-depth analysis of the person and angler that he was. It also includes a substantial personal perspective from Dick's widow Pat, giving an insight into him as a family man, and tributes from some of today's best-known anglers. Whether or not there is ever a successor to Dick in the angling world, this book records for posterity the extraordinary contribution made by this one man in the twentieth century. The first copies of the first edition carried an extra line of text stating that they were one of the first printing of 699 copies. This copy is from a subsequent printing. .

"In the 1950s and 60s salmon populations were under severe threat. Hydro-electric power and poaching gangs were indiscriminately killing large numbers of fish and illegal drift netting was widespread. As if that wasn't enough the dreaded salmon disease UDN was found in many British rivers. There were uncontrolled and expanding open seas fisheries off Greenland, Norway, Ireland and the Faroes. With so many threats to the future of salmon it was obvious that something had to be done. The 1966 Annual Conference of the Salmon and Trout Association proposed that an independent Trust should be set up to undertake research, education and management of salmon stocks. The Trust was the idea of a group of like-minded salmon enthusiasts, and many others closely involved with salmon fisheries and management gave their support to the scheme. A year later, in 1967 the Atlantic Salmon Research Trust came into being, the forerunner for what is now known as the Atlantic Salmon Trust. This book provides a history of the Trust, its work and increasingly international influence, and considers the great advances made in science and fisheries management that may help to secure a future for the Atlantic salmon." .

Copy #162 of 500 numbered cloth-bound copies. Fishermen's paths have one thing in common. They all lead to the waterside. Mike Winter's paths have taken him to many of the watersides of the south and south-west in the company of great friends and great anglers, including Dick Walker, Peter Stone, Fred J. Taylor and Jack Hilton. In 1958 he founded the Devon Carp Catchers' Club but became more of an all-round angler as the years went by. Along Fishermen's Paths is the story of this one angler and his most memorable fishing expeditions. Of interest from a historical perspective, it also provides a good read - an evocation of fishing as it was, in the tradition of "BB" and Venables. The book is beautifully illustrated by Quinton Winter. .
