He collaborated with Stanley Kubrick on '2001: A Space Odyssey',inspired by his short story 'The Sentinel'. Cloth. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. The first UK edition of this novel by noted science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke. With dustwrapper featuring an oil portrait by Deborah Jones. The work was first published a year earlier in the USA. This is the first UK edition. Arthur C. Clarke was a British science fiction writer and inventor, who is widely regarded as a key figure in the popularisation of space travel. His screenplay for the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was co-written with Stanley Kubrick, is considered to be one of the most influential films of all time. For many years Arthur C. Clarke, along with Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asmiov, were considered the 'Big Three' of science fiction writing. Childhood's End tells the story of a peaceful alien invasion of earth, leading to many years of apparent utopia at the cost of human identity and culture. Childhood's End is often regarded as Clarke's best novel and the themes of transcendent evolution are present in his later works, including the screenplay for 2001: A Space Odyssey. The story has also been adapted into radio and television shows. In a blue cloth binding in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally generally smart, with bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Sunning to extremities. Boards slightly warped with staining to front board and foreedge. Offsetting to endpapers. Dustwrapper is sound with slight chipping and small closed tears to extremities. Creasing to the head and tail of the spine. Handling marks to the wrap. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with just some marginal age toning due to paper used. Good. book.

First edition, first impression, one of 1,000 copies, notably uncommon in the jacket, this copy from the distinguished collection of John Henry von Schröder. Collecting from as early as 1939 and buying directly from Christopher Hassall, the friend and biographer of Eddie Marsh, Schröder assembled one of the finest Brooke collections, including many volumes from the poet's library. The collection was published in a handsome catalogue by the Rampant Lions Press in 1970. The volume is divided into four sections, which include the much anthologized "The Soldier" ("If I should die, think only this of me: / That there's some corner of a foreign field / That is for ever England"). Shortly after Brooke's death in 1915, Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, paid anonymous tribute: "The poet-soldier told with all the simple force of genius the sorrow of youth about to die, and the sure triumphant consolations of a sincere and valiant spirit" (The Times, 26 April 1915). John Schröder, Catalogue of books and manuscripts by Rupert Brooke, Edward Marsh & Christopher Hassall, 1970, no. 15. Octavo. Original blue cloth, printed paper label to head of spine, spare title label tipped-in at rear as issued, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. With dust jacket and original glassine. Housed in custom red morocco-backed solander box. Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard. A near-fine copy in very good dust jacket, spine panel barely toned thanks to glassine and minimally ruffled at foot, offsetting to front panel from bookplate inside folding case, couple of nicks, two closed tears to at bottom of rear panel, edges otherwise sharp, a striking example.
