Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated, Cefntilla Court, was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore, with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic. Volume XL (1940) no. 1-230, with plates A-M. With twelve plates to every volume, except volume 24, which has 14 plates, and volumes 34 and 36 which have 13 plates, collated and complete. From volume 32 onward, some of the plates are in colour. The monthly magazine was called Man until 1995, when it changed to its current name, the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute. As well as an extensive book review section to the rear, the magazine comprises articles embracing a whole range of fields within anthropology. With illustrated articles on sociocultural, biological, archaeological, medical, material, and visual anthropology, this set offers something for all those interesting in the discipline. The final page of volume 31 has a small tear at the bottom. Volume 33 is missing the preliminaries. Bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes. From the library of Cefntilla Court, a house that was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for the descendants Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. Volumes 27, and 29 through to 39 have been rebound with patterned endpapers. From volume 32 onwards, volumes are an inch wider. Rebound in black cloth. Externally, very smart, with some rubbing to the front boards of volumes 24 and 29, and some light marks to volume 30. Volumes 27 and 31 are lightly rubbed at the front joint. Internally, firmly bound. All volumes are lightly foxed to the front and the rear, and there is some offsetting to the title page of volume 37, but pages are generally bright and clean across the set. Very Good Indeed. book.
