Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. _Commando_ is the real and exciting story of one of the most important units of World War II. The Commando unit played an important role in Britain's successes and, here, Durnford-Slater gives his first-hand and unique point of view on everything that happened. Brigadier Durnford-Slater raised and trained the first Commando unit in 1940, and Commando tells the brilliant story of an outstanding leader and some of the most courageous exploits of the Second World War. In 1940, 3 Commando was created to harry opposition forces in raids impossible for regular army units. Durnford-Slater led No. 3 Commando on an exploratory operation in Guernsey in summer 1940, and never looked back after that. From there, No. 3 Commando orchestrated raids on the Loften Islands and Vaagso in Norway and Dieppe, as well as operations in Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. The commandos were so effective at creating destruction that Hitler personally ordered that all fighters captured during these missions be executed. Despite this immense threat, the commandos' spirit remained undented and extremely high. This excellent, first-hand account explains the creation of Commando, the nature of their operations, the high level of camaraderie between the men and the effect that they had on the course of the War. It is an exciting and instructive guide to what really went on with Commando. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. It shows the variety and depth of the men sent into harms way during World War II, something emphasised by the population of Stalag Luft III. Most of the Allied POWs were flyers, with all the technical, tactical and planning skills that profession requires. Such men are independent thinkers, craving open air and wide-open spaces, which meant than an obsession with escape was almost inevitable'- John D Gresham Between dusk and dawn on the night of March 24th-25th 1944, a small army of Allied soldiers crawled through tunnels in Germany in a covert operation the likes of which the Third Reich had never seen before. The prison break from Stalag Luft III in eastern Germany was the largest of its kind in World War II. Seventy nine Allied soldiers and airmen made it outside the wire - but only three made it outside Nazi Germany. Fifty were executed by the Gestapo. Jonathan Vance tells the incredible story that was made famous by the 1963 film, The Great Escape. The escape is a classic tale of prisoner and their wardens in a battle of wits and wills. The brilliantly conceived escape plan is overshadowed only by the colourful, daring (and sometimes very funny) crew who executed it - literally under the noses of German guards. From their first days in Stalag Luft III and the forming of bonds key to such exploits, to the tunnel building, amazing escape and eventual capture, Vance's history is a vivid, compelling look at one of the greatest 'exfiltration' missions of all time. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Richard Freiherr von Rosen was a highly-decorated Wehrmacht soldier and outstanding panzer commander. His memoirs, richly illustrated with contemporary photographs, including key confrontations of World War II. After serving as a gunlayer on a Pz.Mk.III during Barbarossa, he led a Company of Tigers at Kursk, later a company of King Tiger panzers at Normandy and in late 1944 commanded a battle group (12 King Tigers and a flak Company) against the Russians in Hungary in the rank of junior, later senior lieutenant (from November 1944, his final rank.) ?? Only 489 of these King Tiger tanks were ever built. They were the most powerful heavy tanks to see service, and only one kind of shell could penetrate their armour at a reasonable distance. Every effort had to be made to retrieve any of them bogged down or otherwise immobilized, which led to many towing adventures. The author has a fine memory and eye for detail, his account is easy to read and not technical, and adds very substantially to the knowledge of how the German Panzer Arm operated in the Second World War. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Peninsular War was one of the most successful campaigns ever fought by the British Army. Between 1808, when British troops landed in Portugal, and 1814, when Wellington's Army advanced into the south of France, British soldiers were involved in countless battles and sieges against Napoleon's vaunted French veterans. Drawing on rare letters, diaries and memoirs, Ian Fletcher presents a superb insight into the daily lives of British soldiers in this momentous period and evokes such key battles and sieges as Vimiero, Talavera, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria and San Sebastian. Ian Fletcher's skilful compilation of accounts, placed in context by important background detail, make this the story of the Peninsular War in the words of the men who marched, fought and triumphed with Wellington. Although there have been many accounts of soldiering in Wellington's army, Voices from the Peninsula throws new light on the experience of Napoleonic warfare and brings to life what Wellington called 'the finest military machine in existence'. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The ultimate reference work on Britain's greatest admiral Based on the latest research and newly discovered material Very well known author in the field Even after two centuries interest in Nelson shows no signs of abating. Indeed, new research continues to reveal previously unsuspected aspects of his life and career; while at the same time hoary old myths, like his wearing a piratical style eye-patch, doggedly persist. In this book an author who is a master of the subject sets out to answer any question about Nelson likely to be raised, either by a casual reference or in a more detailed study of the navy, the wars, or the social history of the period. Entries cover people, ships, places and events associated with the man, and extend to contemporary issues like changing interpretations of his actions and motivation. Arranged alphabetically and fully cross-referenced, every subject is accorded enough length for proper discussion, and each is followed by a suggested reading list for those wanting to pursue the topic further. The book concludes with appendices devoted to a full bibliography, a chronology of Nelson's life and times, and a selection of significant documents, some previously unpublished. Not only an unrivalled companion to every aspect of his career, The Nelson Encyclopaedia is also an ideal introduction to the world of the Royal Navy at the pinnacle of its success. Already a success in hardback, this new paperback edition will coincide with the well-publicised events to celebrate the Trafalgar bicentenary. Deputy Director of the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth, COLIN WHITE is Britain's acknowledged expert on Nelson, and is currently seconded to the National Maritime Museum as the Director of its Trafalagar 200 celebrations. Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. An unparalleled account of a remarkable aircraft and its pilots Based on official sources and first-hand accounts Details the development of the plane throughout WWII To many people, the Spitfire not only symbolised Britain's victory during the Battle of Britain, but was the very embodiment of air fighting during World War II. The Story of the Spitfire presents a thrilling appraisal of this remarkable aircraft's fighting capability and its pilots' tactics. Using official evaluations and reports, alongside technical and tactical developments, plus the recollections of Spitfire pilots, the book provides an unparalleled insight into the combat career of this legendary plane. Despite problems with their new aircraft, the Fighter Command pilots of 1940 were delighted with the Spitfire - speed, manoeuvrability and fire-power were all greater than they had been with the biplanes of only a year earlier. In terms of tactics and training the RAF was out of date. The air battles over Britain in late 1940 forged the Spitfire legend - but how justified was it? There were only 19 Spitfire squadrons in Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, but as the RAF turned to the offensive the numbers of Spitfires increased. The combat initiative was lost to improved Bf 109s and Fw 190s, but developments in the Spitfire clawed back the advantage, with increased performance and training. By 1944 the Spitfire was frequently operating as a fighter-bomber with new tactics and problems. To many fighter-pilots having bombs strapped under the aircraft verged on an insult - but with aerial targets in short supply this was the most effective way of taking the war to the enemy. The Story of the Spitfire details the introduction, development and successes of this incredible aircraft, and charts the training and skills of its pilots. It is a compelling account which will be welcomed by both enthusiast and general reader alike. Ken Delve is the author of more than twenty aviation books, including Bomber Command, D-Day: The Air Battle and Night Fighter. Alfred Price, FRHistS, has published nearly fifty aviation books, including Battle of Britain Day (Greenhill) and Target Berlin (Greenhill). The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This is the definitive biography of one of the most controversial figures of World War II. Sir Arthur Harris remains the target of criticism and vilification by many, while others believe the contribution he and his men made to victory is grossly undervalued. Henry Probert's critical but sympathetic new account draws on recent research and, for this first time, all of Harris's own extensive papers, to give outstanding insight into a man who combined leadership, professionalism and decisiveness with kindness, humour and generosity. Probert examines Harris's life from youth in Rhodesia to fighting in World War I, the interwar years, his two families and his post-war years in South Africa and England. He reveals and analyses how Harris did his job in RAF Bomber Command during World War II, his leadership of his men in the face of appalling casualties, his disagreements with higher authority, his dealings with Churchill, his close links with the Americans, his role in directing the bombing raids against Germany, most notably at Dresden, and the way he was treated afterwards. Bomber Harris provides the most complete and rounded picture of one of the great high commanders of modern times and an outstanding military personality of World War II. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. When Wellington's troops marched over the Pyrenees in the autumn of 1813, the Peninsular War was far from over. Indeed, with their French adversaries defending French soil, months of stubborn, relentless fighting were to follow. In this compelling account of the closing months of the Peninsular War, Ian Robertson details the difficult and brutal fighting which so characterised this phase of a stubborn, six-year conflict. Drawing on eyewitness accounts and official despatches, Ian Robertson outlines the nature of the war as well as tracing the complicated manoeuvering and operations of the British and French armies. He describes in detail such hard-fought actions as the Nivelle, Orthez, Toulouse and Bayonne and throws light on some less-well-known clashes, many of which were fought in the unforgiving terrain of the Pyrenees. For Wellington, as well as for his men, the campaign in France was a test of stamina and endurance. Now in hostile territory, and fighting an implacable and energetic foe, Wellington's troops fought hard to crown their victories and bring the war to a successful conclusion. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. As the Allies made their inexorable last assault upon Germany in 1945, Adolf Hitler, the supreme commander-in-chief of all German armed forces, ordered that every official military document should be destroyed. Admiral Karl Donitz, then supreme commander-in-chief of the Navy, felt differently. The Navy, he believed, had waged an honourable war, and posterity would prove the fairest judge. Accordingly, the records fell into Allied hands. Were it not for Donitz's singular decision, this remarkable book would not exist. Fuehrer Conferences on Naval Affairs, 1939-1945 is the faithful, first-hand account of Hitler's meetings with his Navy commander-in-chiefs - Grand Admiral Dr Erich Raeder until January 1943, then Admiral Donitz - and a handful of other high-ranking officers. Such was the nature of these meetings that even secretaries were excluded, and both Raeder and Donitz personally checked the typescripts of the meeting-notes before approving them. The conferences concerned either subjects upon which Hitler requested information or topics that the commanders-in-chief wanted to bring to the Fuehrer's attention. This is, therefore, an authentic and intimate account of the views of Axis high command upon naval strategy and its execution throughout the World War II, covering such key events as the invasion of Norway, the plans to invade Britain, the sinking of the Bismarck, and the Normandy landings. Indeed, Hitler's comments and decisions are noted throughout. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The story of the Royal Naval Commandos in World War II Contains a wealth of first-hand accounts Foreword by Man and Boy author Tony Parsons The Royal Naval Commandos had one of the most dangerous and important tasks of any unit in World War II - they were first onto the invasion beaches and they were the last to leave. Formed in 1941 as the Royal Naval Beach Parties, many lost their lives in the Dieppe raid. Organised into units from A Commando to the all-Canadian W Commando, after Dieppe they became fully fledged fighting Commandos with their legendary Fairbairn Sykes knives. Under their officers who were designated Beachmasters, the Royal Naval Commandos led the way in on the beaches as part of the Allied landings in Madagascar, North Africa, Pantelleria, Sicily, Salerno, the Volturno River, Anzio, Arakan, Normandy, Elba, Walcheren and Commachio. Their work on the beaches was crucial to the success of the Allied invasions. The story of the Commandos covers their beginnings early in the war and their training, both at their base, HMS Armadillo at Ardentinny in Scotland, and the famous Achnacarry Commando training school, to the invasions they spearheaded. After the war the Royal Naval Commandos were disbanded and their wartime role was given to the Royal Marines. The personal accounts of the Commandos contained in this book will ensure that their legacy is not forgotten. Beachhead Assault includes a foreword by Man and Boy author Tony Parsons, whose father was a Royal Naval Commando who fought at Elba. As he writes, 'Every page of this book is covered with tales of an almost suicidal courage.' It also contains a preface by Ken Oakley, Chairman of the Royal Naval Commando Association. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Second World War was the first in which amphibious landings played a truly significant part in the outcome of a global conflict and in this work, drawing on the testimonies of hundreds of participants, the author recounts the experiences of those who partook in all the allied amphibious landings during World War II, and in doing so describes some of the most significant battles of the war. The book is structured broadly chronologically and is divided into two: the first half deals with the European theatre and covers, amongst other landings, Salerno, the Dieppe raid, and the D-Day landing in Normandy; the second half focuses on the Pacific and Guadal canal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa are some of the landings which are covered in detail. Every aspect of amphibious warfare is described and the experiences of the planners, the landing craft crew, the crews of the support ships, the assault troops, technicians, the air crews who provided support, and the follow-up troops and replacements are all told. Literally hundreds of testimonies were taken by the author in the preparation of this book and the resulting work aims to describe the realities and horrors of war as well as the humour and comradeship, and the technical and logistical factors which influenced the allied experience of amphibious warfare. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Second World War produced a unique band of heroes: a small international group of men that were uniquely celebrated and lauded for their remarkable courage. The group was the so-called Guinea Pig Club, the band of airmen who crawled from burning aircraft but suffered the worst imaginable burns and crash injuries. The 647 survivors included British, Canadian, Czech and Polish airmen. Before the war, no one had anticipated airmen would survive mid-air fires. Consequently, provision for their care was virtually non-existant. Their rehabilitation was placed in the hands of one plastic surgeon named Archibald McIndoe at a hospital in East Grinsted, in the south of England. McIndoe quickly constructed a medical infrastructure from scratch. After arguing with his superiors, he set up a revolutionary new treatment regime. Uniquely concerned with the social environment, or 'holistic care', McIndoe also enlisted the help of the local civilian population. He rightly secured his patients a place in society as Allied war heroes. The Canadian government was so impressed with his work that it funded a Canadian Wing at the hospital. For the first time official records have been used to fully explain how the patients were injured, treated, then paraded as heroes. Using gripping first-hand accounts, Emily Mayhew paints a genuinely-moving picture illustrating incredible courage and triumph. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The first in a series of books, _I Somehow Survived_ is an extraordinary collection of true stories giving testimony to those who survived World War II. Based on interviews with numerous veterans from across the spectrum of wartime experience, the book documents and reflects upon one of the most gruesome times in history. From anti-partisan warfare in the French mountains, atrocities in East Prussia, to the experience of a Norwegian concentration camp, the book includes rarely heard stories from a range of people caught up in the war. With the distance of time, these survivors have been able to offer new perspectives on their experiences and expose truths they would not have dared admit several decades ago. German Army officers reveal their role in the Vercors and Kiev massacres. A Luftwaffe officer-applicant who never flew describes service on the ground. And a Norwegian woman writes of marrying a German Kriegsmarine while her mother was in a Norwegian concentration camp for political activity and her father was in hiding from the Gestapo. "I have no objection to your marrying him," her father told her, "I just want them to give us our country back.". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
