Erstausgabe Signiert
Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First paperback edition of Kosinski's first book (other than two works in Polish), and the first of two under the Novak pseudonym. Very good, solid copy, spine not cracked or creased. Inscribed by Kosinski on the first page. He first signed his name as Joseph Novak, drew beneath it what looks like a caricature of a bird (an allusion to The Painted Bird, perhaps), and then wrote the following over the rest of the page: "For Americe (?), with warmest regards, sincerely, Jerzy Kosinski Fall of 1987." This paperback edition is uncommon. Kosinski's reputation as a writer and his personal reputation as well came under a cloud in the years before his suicide in 1991. It is interesting that, in maligning him, his critics did not address the composition of the two Novak books, which only he, based as they were on his own experiences, could have written, and which are extremely effective pieces of writing. Introduction by Irving R. Levine. Inscribed by Author(s).
