Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A fascinating account of the powerful roles fur has played in various cultures and of the historical and political forces at work in the play of its meanings.-Jonathan Culler, Cornell UniversityIn this well-written treatise, Emberley. views fur through widely disparate lenses. Emberley is able to make us understand all the viewpoints she presents. A valuable book on a little-explored subject.-Library JournalThis is a strong and intelligent work on a controversial topic. Emberley's book is much more intellectually sophisticated than anything else I've seen on this subject.-Valerie Steele, Editor, Fashion TheoryJulia Emberley's book is a complex, wide-ranging, and fascinating feminist critique of the history and meaning of fur and fashion. Particularly unique is her integration of indigenous voices into the debates.-Lucy Lippard, author of The Pink Glass Swan: Selected Feminist Essays on ArtFur has been sparking controversies ever since sumptuary laws marked it as a luxury item and as a sign of medieval class privilege. Drawing on wide-ranging historical and contemporary sources, Julia V. Emberley explains how a material good has become both a symbol of wealth and sexuality, and a symptom of class, gender, and imperial antagonisms. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In The Edge of Extinction, Jules Pretty explores life and change in a dozen environments and cultures across the world, taking us on a series of remarkable journeys through deserts, coasts, mountains, steppes, snowscapes, marshes, and farms to show that there are many different ways to live in cooperation with nature. From these accounts of people living close to the land and close to the edge emerge a larger story about sustainability and the future of the planet. Pretty addresses not only current threats to natural and cultural diversity but also the unsustainability of modern lifestyles typical of industrialized countries. In a very real sense, Pretty discovers, what we manage to preserve now may well save us later. Jules Prettys travels take him among the Maori people along the coasts of the Pacific, into the mountains of China, and across petroglyph-rich deserts of Australia. He treks with nomads over the continent-wide steppes of Tuva in southern Siberia, walks and boats in the wildlife-rich inland swamps of southern Africa, and experiences the Arctic with ice fishermen in Finland. He explores the coasts and inland marshes of eastern England and Northern Ireland and accompanies Innu people across the taigas snowy forests and the lakes of the Labrador interior. Pretty concludes his global journey immersed in the discrete cultures and landscapes embedded within the American landscape: the small farms of the Amish, the swamps of the Cajuns in the deep South, and the deserts of California. The diverse people Pretty meets in The Edge of Extinction display deep pride in their relationships with the land and are only willing to join with the modern world on their own terms. By the examples they set, they offer valuable lessons for anyone seeking to find harmony in a world cracking under the pressures of apparently insatiable consumption patterns of the affluent. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. American power today is without historical precedent, dominating the world system. No other nation has enjoyed such formidable advantages in military, economic, technological, cultural, and political capabilities. How stable is this unipolar American order? Will the age-old dynamic of the balance of power reemerge as the other great powers rise up to challenge American preeminence? America Unrivaled examines these questions. The experts in this volume contend that full-scale balancing in this new world order has not yet occurred. They ask if a backlash against American dominance is just around the corner, or if characteristics of the current situation alter or eliminate the entire logic of power balancing. American power poses threats, as do the likely responses to that power, the experts argue in America Unrivaled. The definition of these threats is critical to understanding future political trends and learning whether an original (and stable) world system has already come into existence. Most of the contributors agree that novel features of the American hegemony and the wider global order make an automatic return to a traditional balance of power order unlikely. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

PAPERBACK, I find an ink note in the margin on one page, otherwise very good copy. ROSENWEIN, BARBARA H. Anger's past: the social uses of an emotion in the Middle Ages. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1998, x, 256pp., . Books have rarely been written about the history of any emotion except love and shame, and this volume is the very first on the meaning of anger in the Middle Ages. Well aware of modern theories about the nature of anger, the authors consider the role of anger in the social lives and conceptual universes of a varied and significant cross-section of medieval people: monks, saints, kings, lords, and peasants. They are careful to distinguish between texts (the sources on which historians must rely) and the reality behind the texts. They are sensitive, as well, to the differences between ideals and normative behavior. - CONTENTS: Anger in monastic curses / Lester K. Little -- Gertrude's furor: reading anger in an early medieval saint's Life / Catherine Peyroux -- Ira regis: prolegomena to a history of royal anger / Gerd Althoff -- "Just anger" or "vengeful anger"? : the punishment of blinding in the early medieval West / Geneviève Bührer-Thierry -- What did Henry III of England think in bed and in French about kingship and anger? / Paul Hyams -- The politics of anger / Stephen D. Flueckiger, Joyce Burkhalter. Gender and genre in the folklore of middle India. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1996, , PAPERBACK, very good. Joyce Burkhalter Flueckiger here analyzes six representative Indian folklore genres from a single regional repertoire to show the influence of their intertextual relations on the composition and interpretation of artistic performance. Placing special emphasis on women's rituals, she looks at the relationship between the framework and organization of indigenous genres and the reception of folklore performance. Flueckiger shows how, in the Chhattisgarh region of India, folklore genres are categorized primarily in terms of the community to which a tradition "belongs." What does it mean, she asks, for a particular performance tradition to be identified with unmarried girls, tribal castes, or the region itself? What are the interpretive frames drawn by this system of genre identification? And what are the resulting intertextual relationships? Exploring such questions, Flueckiger relies on the indigenous articulation, gathered through oral commentary, of the Chhattisgarh repertoire and its principles of organization. A significant feature of this system is the absence of discrimination between ritual and verbal traditions. Flueckiger's analysis suggests that ritual and verbal traditions are inherent to both a genre and its interpretation. The regional repertoire under examination presents a strikingly female-centered world. Female performers and characters are active and articulate, and frequently challenge or defy expectations of gender. Men also confound traditional gender roles. Flueckiger includes the translations of two full performance texts of narratives sung by female and male storytellers respectively. Joyce Burkhalter Flueckiger is Assistant Professor of Religion at Emory University. 9780801483448 ISBN 0801483441.
