First edition. Oblong folio (12" x 14"). Color photo dust jacket, gray spine lettered in white, over gray cloth lettered in silver. Profusely illustrated with 60 full-page color portraits. A fine, as new copy. Joel Sternfeld first came to international attention in 1987 with the publication of American Prospects, a landmark study of how the social order is revealed through landscape. Stranger Passing expands that study and functions as a companion [to it]. Accompanied by text from Ian Frazier and Douglas R. Nickel, this collection functions as an in-depth look into the breadth and growth of Sternfeld's art. "Published on the occasion of the exhibition Stranger passing: collected portraits by Joel Sternfeld, organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, July 6 to October 2, 2001"-- (Colophon).

Hardcover. Stated First Edition. Quarto. Grey cloth-covered boards. More than 120 fantabulous and strikingly intimate photos of the "who's who" of rock & roll fame. Foreword by Michael Douglas. Four-page afterword by Jon Bowermaster. SIGNED by Jim Marshall, on Publisher's bookplate, affixed to front free endpaper. General shelfwear, a few minor blemishes to boards. One bumped corner and several nudged. Edgewear to dustjacket. I like to photograph people when they're doing what they do best. When you see my pictures, it's about the person in the photograph, not me -- not the guy behind the lens. I want someone to see those PEOPLE, not my picture of them." (Jim Marshall) "Jim Marshall is the ultimate rock & roll photographer - a man who was shooting during San Francisco's acid rock heyday and never stopped. His outsized personality and penchant for fast living have given hinm a special rapport with musicians over the years -- from the early 1960s to the present -- and enabled him to get the candid, revealing shots no one else even attempted." Front flap -------------- "From the dressing room to the stage Jim Marshall is unquestionably the godfather of rock & roll photography. His discerning eye and his ability to capture emotion give us the perfect window into the netherworld of rock & roll music." Mark Seliger, Chief Photographer, Rolling Stone -------------- "In the same way that you can't separate John Coltrane or Miles Davis from their music, you can't separate Jim Marshall from his photographs. He captures the soul of each musician and immortalizes us in liquid light." Carlos Santana. Very Good in Good Plus Dustjacket.

Hardcover. Zustand: vg. 4to. 182,[4]pp. Pictorial paper-covered boards. "The pictures in this book are a selection of the photographs I took of American athletes who were training to take part in the Games in Atlanta. In meets and competitions all over the country, the best athletes were testing themselves, and being tested, as part of the process of qualifying for a place on the American teams. My photographs were done in individual and group sessions that I set up with the athletes. This gave me the opportunity to depict movement close up, intimately - when movement was the subject. Of course, it wasn't always the subject. Each time I worked with an athlete I had two possibilities: I could concentrate on the person (a portrait in the more conventional sense) or I could concentrate on the sport. Sometimes I was able to do both." (A. Leibovitz). All of the photographs are double- or full-page b/w reproductions. Corners very slightly rubbed, minor scuffing to boards. Near fine condition.
