Zustand: Gut. XLVIII, 232 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - The epic poem the Thebaid was composed by Statius about AD 80 to 92 in twelve books. The subject is the expedition of the Seven against Thebes in support of the attempt by Oedipus son Polyneices to recover the throne from his brother Eteocles. Book IX is set in the midst of the fighting before the eventual death of the two brothers. -- In this new edition of Book IX of the Thebaid, Dr Dewar accompanies the Latin text with apparatus criticus, a translation, and an extensive introduction and commentary. The introduction contains sections on Statius life and works, on the poetry, textual tradition, and themes of Thebaid IX, and on the poet s influence on later European literature. The commentary, the first on the ninth book to be published in Britain this century, is written in the light of recent scholarship. It examines in close detail Statius style and language, use of models (especially Homer, Hellenistic Greek poetry, Virgil, Lucan, and Seneca), and literary intentions. It is Dr Dewar s hope that this edition will help explain the poem s great popularity in the Middle Ages, and even restore something of its lost prestige. Cloth with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. XXXVII, 386 p. - Schutzumschlag leicht berieben und weist leichte Randläsuren auf, Vorderschnitt leicht verschmutzt, sonst sehr guter Zustand / dust jacket slightly rubbed and has slight edge wear, fore-edge slightly soiled, otherwise very good condition. - An epic story of fratricide and war, the Thebaid retells the legendary conflict between the sons of Oedipus Polynices and Eteocles for control of the city of Thebes. The Latin poet Statius chose to rework a familiar tale from Greek myth, dramatized long before by Aeschylus in his tragedy Seven against Thebes. Published in a.d. 92, the Thebaid was an immediate success, and its fame grew in succeeding centuries. It reached its peak of popularity in the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance, influencing Dante, Chaucer, and quite possibly Shakespeare. More recently, however, it has received less attention than it deserves, in large part because there has been no accessible, dynamic translation of the work into English. Charles Stanley Ross offers a compelling version of the Thebaid rendered into forceful, modern English. Casting Statius s Latin hexameter into a lively iambic pentameter more natural to the modern ear, Ross frees the work from the archaic formality that has limited previous translations. His translation reinvigorates the Thebaid as a whole: its meditative opening and its violent conclusion; its intimate portrayal of defeat, retribution, and the need to seek justice at any cost. In a wide- ranging introduction, Ross provides an overview of the poem s composition, reception, and legacy; major themes and literary influences; and place in Statius s life. And in a well-chosen series of notes, he offers background information on major characters and incidents. / Contents Introduction The THEBAID 1 Exile 2 Ambush 3 Omens 4 Thirst 5 Women of Lemnos 6 Funeral Games 7 Earth Opens 8 Savage Hunger 9 Tide and Time 10 Sacrifices 11 Piety 12 Clemency Notes Selected Proper Names Selected Annotated Bibliography Acknowledgments. Folio (30 x 20 cm). ll.203+[1, bank]. Title-page printed in Gothic type, text printed in two sizes of roman type with surrounding commentary. Full eighteenth-century vellum, marbled endpapers, speckled edges. Collates complete. Decorative woodcut initials throughout. Ex libris Antonia Suardi Ponti with their bookplate to flyleaf, along with additional old ownership inscription dated 1736. Small (2x5 cm) loss to bottom corner of leaf 92 (m8) due to damp staining with minor loss of marginal commentary, tiny wormhole to margins of first 17 and last 8 leaves, generally a fine, well-preserved copy. The scarce first sixteenth-century folio edition of Statius (the first being Aldus's octavo edition of 1502), comprising the Silvae, the Thebaid, and the Achilleid, with commentaries by Domizio Calderini, Lactantius Placidus, and Francesco Maturanzio. The first complete edition of the works of Statius was published in 1483; the Silvae being rediscovered by Poggio Bracciolini in 1417. Apparently a reprint of a 1498 printing (Goff S694) by the same Venitian printer. Adams S-1671; a scarce edition not in the BL Italian STC. (Adams, S-1671).
