[Guangdong 1971, Ren Min Chu Ban She].Red vinyl soft covers, 1406p.,gilt tites on spine & front cover, frontispiece sepia tone Mao photo, 9.2 x 13 cm., in very RARE original slipcase with LIN Biao's calligraphy slogan, 8th. Edition. * RARE * . *** **** *** . . ONE OF THE FAVORITE "LITTLE RED BOOKS" READ & CARRIED . . . BY THE HONG WEI BING [RED GUARDS] DURING THE . . . WEN HUA DA GEMING [CULTURAL REVOLUTION OF 1966] . * This anthology & "Selected Works" was one of the most popular books of the Hong Wei Bing during the cultural revolution. It is pictured in many posters and was present through the period. . This is perhaps one of the Hong Wei Bing's most favorite of Mao's essays and writings, covering the period of 1924-1949. . Bound in the Avant-garde iconic original red vinyl covers, with gold-stamped spine & cover titles. . LIN BIAO'S SLOGAN: When present, the RARE original board slipcase had the title on the face and spine. On the back side, was LIN's most famous of all slogans reading: . "Du Mao zhuxí de shu: Read Chairman Mao's books, . Ting Mao zhuxí dehua: Listen to Chairman Mao's words, . Zhao Mao zhuxí de zhishì banshì. Act according to Chairman Mao's instructions, . Zuo Mao zhuxi deo zhanshì. And be a good soldier of Chairman Mao." . This and any other slogan, photo, or mention of LIN after September 1971 was ordered to be expunged by Mao from all official books, posters, writings, photos and anything related to Lin country-wide. LIN was wiped from history. In China, very few survived his purge, therefore many books were defaced, related pages pull & discarded or scribbled over. By and large, all vestiges of LIN Biao was removed from history. . *** VARIANTS: There are variants, some copies had an image of Mao on the front cover, copies vary, please read 'Variant Copy" below for details of each item for sale. . *** WITH THE ORIGINAL BOARD SLIPCASE: . When present, the original board slipcase is very RARE, seldom found if at all. The slipcase was stapled or glued, with red back & spine titles, and famous slogan by LIN Biao's most famous of all slogans in his red calligraphy on the front cover. Cited above. . *** LIN BIAO [1907-1971]: He was a Chinese politician and Marshal of the People's Republic of China who was pivotal in the Communist party. . He became First Vice Premier from 1964. Lin became more active in politics when named one of the co-serving Vice Chairmen of the Chinese Communist Party in 1958. He held the three responsibilities of Vice Premier, Vice Chairman and Minister of National Defense from 1959 onwards. To date, Lin is the longest serving Minister of National Defense of the People's Republic of China. Lin became instrumental in creating the foundations for Mao Zedong's cult of personality in the early 1960s, and was rewarded for his service in the Cultural Revolution by being named Mao's designated successor as the sole Vice Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, from 1966 until his death. . Lin was appointed & endorsed by Mao to be the 'official' leader of the WEN HUA DA GEMING [CULTURAL REVOLUTION] and the leader of the HONG WEI BING [RED GUARDS]. That is why Lin was often seen presiding over the masses of Revolutionary Red Guards at the mass Beijing rally's, standing next to Mao, both wearing Hong Wei Bing arm bands. . After the "1971 Lin Biao Incident," he was officially condemned as a traitor and fell from favor. His name was expunged from all public places, and his hitherto favor with the HONG WEI BING [Red Guards], became a hatred for him, as the official orders for his name to be expunged from the official records and books, people defaced anything related to him, and it was commonplace to either rip out and discard his slogans, or to deface any essays, photos and references to him in Mao's "Little Red Books." . Of interest, the slip case that came with this book had one of Lin's famous slogans printed in red, 10% of it has either been scraped off or simple disappeared, 20% remains intact. . *** CONDITION: Generic: Bound in the typical red vinyl of most all "Little Red Books," it contains a frontispiece of Chairman Mao. Firmly bound, clean and solid. cover titles stamped in gold, editions & dates vary, carefully read each copy descriptions for exact details. . *** WITH PARTIAL ORIGINAL BOARD SLIPCASE & LIN SLOGAN: . The original and most often missing board slipcase is partially present. The front cover with the red title is intact, as is the spine title. What is missing is about 1/4 of the front portion and about55% of the spine board. Luckily, the LIN Biao slogan on the back side cover is present but badly rubbed, and many of the Hanzi are rubbed way, but not defaced as usual. At least a partial slipcase is present with titles & slogan. By and large the slipcase is almost never found if at all in any condition. . *** ADDITIONAL DETAILS FOR EACH VARIANT COPY: . Copy 3: The red front covers has a medallion round color photo of Chairman Mao in his PLA brown suit "MAO SUIT" and he wears the typical "Mao" cap with a red star. The color frontispiece of Mao has the Lin Biao slogan in red ink calligraphy, which as usual has been crossed out with a pen, some red Hanzi remain in the background. Obviously this was done around September 1971 or thereafter, when LIN fell out of favor with Mao who ordered LIN'S name, photos, slogans, books & anything related to him be expunged from history. The crossing out of LIN's slogans in Mao books was common or those pages were pulled out and discarded apart of a national campaign to remove LIN from all records. . The title page shows Beijing, 1968 [First Edition], commonly done for most any edition. The actual edition per the colophon is Shanghai, August, 1968, third edition. . This is a very clean & solid copy, with a tiny bit of infrequent red pen underline, edge dustiness, else clean, no issues. . WITH PARTIAL RARE ORIGINAL SLIPCASE: . With the very RARE original stapled slipcase. The slipcase is complete, the red spine.

First trade deluxe edition, printed on high-quality paper and bound in the traditional Chinese scholarly style. Each volume could be purchased separately, with a whole set costing almost 50 yuan - more than a worker's average monthly pay under Mao. Although editions of Mao's works first appeared in the 1940s, a finalized canon of four volumes - covering his activities up to the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 - was incrementally published by Renmin chiubanshe (People's Publishing House) between 1951 and 1960. A deluxe edition of these volumes was first published in 1964, printed on fine paper and bound in blue silk wrappers, and copies were made available only to senior cadres and generals. This trade version uses the same text, presented in vertical columns on folded leaves. Copies were issued in folding cases made of either cloth or stiff card. Four volumes in 16 parts, large octavo. Original brown wrappers, white silk xianzhuang stitching, front covers lettered in black within black frame. Housed in publisher's 4 stiff card folding cases with title labels and plastic toggles. Text in traditional Chinese aligned vertically. Epigraph leaves printed in red. Wrappers fresh with a little creasing, traces of labels on inner covers of Volume I, edges foxed, stain on top edge of one part in Volume II. A near-fine copy in the well-preserved cases with light soiling and wear.
