Buch
Zustand: Muy bueno. The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea tells of a band of savage thirteen-year-old boys who reject the adult world as illusory, hypocritical, and sentimental, and train themselves in a brutal callousness they call 'ojectivity'. When the mother of one of them begins an affair with a ship's officer, he and his friends idealise the man at first; but it is not long before they conclude that he is in fact soft and romantic. They regard their disappointment in him as an act of betrayal on his part and react violently. Erstausgabe Signiert
First edition in English, first printing, presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Al Lepage, with the author's best wishes, Yukio Mishima, Sept. 1965", further signed by the author in Japanese beneath [the author's name]. Books signed by Mishima, one of the most important Japanese authors of the 20th century, are scarce, especially English language editions. This novel evokes "the all-too-real world of a band of savage thirteen-year-olds, who reject the adult world as illusory, sentimental, and hypocritical, and shows how they become its secret adversaries" (front flap). It was adapted into Lewis John Carlino's film of the same name in 1976, starring Kris Kristofferson and Sarah Miles in an English rather than Japanese setting. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed red boards, spine lettered in gilt, wave designs in gilt and metallic green on spine and in metallic green on front cover, publisher's imprint in blind on rear cover, top edge yellow, fore edge untrimmed. With Ellen Raskin designed dust jacket. Tiny bump to foot of spine and head of front cover, slight wear to lower corners, a little rubbing, top edge foxed. A very good copy indeed in near-fine jacket, spine lightly toned with chipped ends, closed tear to head of rear panel, trivial nicks and rubbing; a bright and striking example.
