Erstausgabe
Rare first edition of the Swiss polymath's principal philosophical treatise, "the most comprehensive theoretical elaboration of the idea of a 'mathesis universalis'" (Arndt) envisaged by Descartes and Leibniz, containing one of the first appearances of the term "phenomenology". We can trace no copies having appeared at auction outside Germany (five recorded since 1975). "The Neues Organon is divided into four main parts. First, there is the Dianoiology, a doctrine of the laws of truth-preservation the intellect should be guided by (i.e., Lambert's version of formal logic); second, the Alethiology, literally the doctrine of truth, dealing with basic ontological concepts necessary for making truth-claims and with the difference between truth and error; third, Semiotics as a doctrine concerning the relation between (linguistic) signs and truth; and finally, the Phenomenology, which deals with the difference between truth and 'semblance'" (Sturm, p. 119). In addition to philosophy, Lambert (1728-1777) also made important contributions to mathematics (the first to prove that the number pi is irrational), optics (Lambert's cosine law and the Beer-Lambert Law), map projections (the first to address the general properties, publishing seven new projections including the Transverse Mercator), and astronomy. He regularly corresponded with Kant, who thought very highly of his contemporary and intended to dedicate the Critique of Pure Reason to him, though Lambert's untimely death prevented its inclusion ("in all sincerity, I hold you to be the greatest genius in Germany, a man capable of important and enduring contributions to the investigations in which I too am working", letter to Lambert of 31 December 1765 quoted in Watkins, p. 176). Both the Neues Organon and its author would become of paramount importance to the development of subsequent philosophy and particularly as pioneering within the field of logic. DSB VII, pp. 595-600; Goedeke IV/1, pp. 478-9; Ziegenfuss II, pp. 10-11. Hans Werner Arndt, introduction to a reprint of the Neues Organon, 1965; Thomas Sturm, "Lambert and Kant on Truth" & Eric Watkins, "Lambert and Kant on Cognition and Science" in Corey W. Dyck & Falk Wunderlich, eds, Kant and His German Contemporaries, 2018. Two volumes, octavo (200 x 130 mm). Uncut in contemporary speckled paper-covered boards, later black spine labels. Engraved head- and tailpieces, initials. 19th-century ink ownership signatures on front free endpapers (dated Lund 1888), small purple ownership stamp (monogrammed G.W.B.D.) and shelf marks on title pages. Binding firm, lightly worn and bumped, small patches to penultimate spine compartments discreetly added at an early date, contents generally crisp and clean, several leaves unopened. Vol. 1: minor damp stain running along upper margins, front free endpaper thinned at upper edge, a few neat annotations in German, small tear to D3 (affecting a couple letters of running title) and to rear free endpaper. Vol. 2: loss at lower corner of K1 not affecting text. Overall a very well-preserved copy, uncut in a contemporary German binding.
