Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). A uniformly bound collection of a selection of the works of Heinrich Heine, translated by Charles Godfrey Leland. Christian Johann Heinrich Heine was a notable German poet, journalist, essayist, and literary critic, best known outside of Germany for his early lyric poetry. This poetry was often set to music in the form of Lieder by notable composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. Heine's later verse and prose were distinguished by their satirical wit and irony and their often radical political content, that led to many of his works being banned by German authorities. This however helped to increase his popularity, making him one of the best known artists of the 'Young Germany' movement. Whilst he worked as the translator for this collection of works by Heine, Charles Godfrey Leland was a notable writer in his own right, who like Heine travelled extensively. Lelan was predominantly renowned for his interest in folklore and folk linguistics, and publishing many books and articles on American and European languages and folk traditions. In an attractive half calf binding with marbled boards and endpapers, and gilt embellishment to the spines. In a half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Slightly rubbed to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight marking to leather. Slight sunning to spine and gutter to rear board, 'Germany Vol I' and 'Florentine Nights'. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout. Front hinges strained but firm only between endpapers and half title pages. Front free endpapers strained to all volumes, with small sections of loss to gutters. Small closed tear to lower fore edge of free-endpaper, 'Florentine Nights'. Very Good Indeed. book.
