First edition of this "undying classic" (J.M. Keynes). Octavo, original cloth. In very good condition. First editions are scarce. The English precursor to Wall Street, London's Lombard Street is the original district of finance and the birthplace of the money market. Fast-paced and highly-charged, it is a hotbed of financial activity whose impact is felt not just nationally, but globally. Though similar in many ways to its American counterpart, this "unequalled fund of floating money" nevertheless possesses a character all its own, the essence of which was brilliantly captured more than a century ago in Lombard Street. "Walter Bagehot was a great economist and a great writer-though there is a question as to which was the greater. Lombard Street, first published in 1873, is more than ever timely in the age of Asian financial flu, Long-Term Capital Management, problems in Russia, Brazil, and on the horizon elsewhere. Central bankers and finance ministers such as Alan Greenspan and Robert Rubin in the U.S., along with leading IMF officials should each sleep with a copy under his or her pillow" (Charles P. Kindleberger). It is a masterpiece of economics, described by J. M. Keynes as 'an undying classic'. It explains the world of banking and finance, particularly financial crisis management.

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). A handsome copy of the second edition of Walter Bagehot's seminal economic work, providing a comprehensive analysis of the British banking system. The very scarce second edition of this work, published in the same year as the first edition.Termed an 'undying classic' by Keynes, Bagehot's work was published in part as a reaction to the collapse of the Overend-Gurney bank, which caused widespread panic in England in the 1860s.The economist Sir Paul Tucker analysed the message of Bagehot's work as relaying the message that: 'to avert panic, central banks should lend early and freely (ie without limit), to solvent firms, against good collateral, and at "high rates"'.Bagehot's work lays out principles for the managing financial crises, including the need for prompt and decisive action by central banks, transparency in their operations, and the establishment of rules to guide their interventions. The second edition of a classic work of economic theory; Bagehot's recommendation that the Bank alter gold reserves based on economic cycles was highly influential. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Front board exceptionally bright, with light tide mark to the tail of the rear board. A touch of discolouration to back strip, with bumping to spine head and tail, and minor losses to the cloth in these regions. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with instances of spotting throughout, most concentrated to first and last few leaves. Very Good Indeed. book.

Erstausgabe
First edition of Bagehot's hugely influential analysis of the British financial system. Lombard Street makes the far-reaching argument that the Bank of England ought to alter its gold reserves in response to economic cycles. The work was considered authoritative well into the 20th century, with the Palgrave observing that "The wonderful clearness of Bagehot's power of statement, his exact knowledge of the subject treated on, together with his firm grasp of economic theory, have caused this volume to exert an influence which few books on a subject naturally so dry have possessed". The title - after London historic financial street - reflects Bagehot's focus on "concrete realities" (p. 1), and particularly his emphasis on the economic role of the Bank. Masui, p. 133. Mark Blaug, Great Economists before Keynes, 1997. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and covers lettered and ruled in gilt and black respectively, dark green coated endpapers, Burn & Co. binder's ticket to rear pastedown. With 32-page publisher's catalogue bound in at rear. Joints, extremities, and inner hinges neatly restored, light bumping and rubbing, minor foxing and toning throughout: a very good copy.
