Robert Montgomery Martin (c. 1801 - 1868) was an Anglo-Irish author and civil servant. He was the first Colonial Treasurer of Hong Kong (1844-45), and member of the Statistical Society of London (1834), the Colonial Society (1837), and the East India Association (1867). He was born in Dublin and trained as a doctor. In 1820 he went to Ceylon, under the patronage of Sir Hardinge Giffard, a friend of his father. He went on to the Cape of Good Hope, where he arrived in June 1823 where he joined the expedition of HMS Leven and HMS Barracouta under William Fitzwilliam Owen, to Delagoa Bay. He went in a temporary capacity as assistant surgeon, serving also as botanist and naturalist on the south-east coast of Africa, Madagascar, and Indian Ocean islands. Later he sailed to New South Wales, and returned to India around the end of 1828, living there for a year, before returning to England in 1830. Martin became a writer and published on India and the colonies. In 1840 he founded and for two years edited the Colonial Magazine. In 1837 he presented a petition to the House of Commons for an amended colonial administrative department. In January 1844, Martin was appointed treasurer of the newly acquired island of Hong Kong, where he was also a member of the legislative council. That same year, he published "Ireland before and after the Union. In May 1845 he disagreed with the governor on the question of raising revenue from opium and on being refused six months' leave, resigned in July 1845. After making unsuccessful efforts to induce the Secretary of State to reinstate him, Martin returned to a literary life, near London. In 1851 he went to Jamaica on a mission to report on the affairs of two mining companies operating there. Martin was one of the original members of the East India Association, founded in 1866. He died at Wellesley Lodge, Sutton, Surrey, on 6 September 1868. (from The British Museum).

A handsome Georgian-era almanac, in a highly attractive contemporary binding. Almanacs such as this provided information on the dates of markets, lists of MP's and advise on which foods to eat at certain times of year depending on your temperament. Cardanus Rider is often said, though probably wrongly, to be the pseudonym of the medical practitioner and astrologer Richard Saunders (1613-1675), who published under his own name an almanac, Apollo Anglicanus, from 1654 until his death. It continued to be published under his name until at least 1781. Saunders was a member of the circle of William Lilly, whose own Merlin was first published in 1644; Rider's British Merlin was first published in in 1653, and was printed annually into the nineteenth century. The Royal Kalendar was first published in 1767, this edition first published in 1775. 2 works in one volume, duodecimo (135 x 73 mm). Contemporary red morocco, envelope flap with metal clasp, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, elaborate gilt tooling to covers, floral endpapers, green silk moiré flap to rear pastedown, gilt edges. First work printed in red and black, and interleaved as usual; woodcut anatomical figure. Partially erased pencil inscriptions to front and rear blank leaves. Small ink marginalia to p. 91. Minor rubbing to extremities, light toning and soiling to leather, minor wear to inside hinge of envelope flap; a very good, bright copy.

Leather bound. Zustand: Very good. First edition. 391pp. plus Index. Octavo [20.5 cm] Full brown leather with a hubbed spine, and a red leather spine label. The rear board is cosmetically cracked along the joint. There is a contemporary owner's name at the head of the front free endsheet. With 16 of the 18 plates. The plates at p. 200 and p. 204 are no longer present (Table 14 and Table 15). The two fold-out illustrations at p. 100 are torn (with tape and a bit of loss to Table 3). The fold-out table at p. 100 has also been taped where torn. This essay is considered to be man-midwife John Burton's most significant contribution towards medicine. Burton, of York, was a prominent Tory, and was later satirized as "Doctor Slop" in Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy.

The Treaty of Madrid (1630), as the conclusion of the Anglo-Spanish War (1625-1630), part of the Eighty Years' War (Dutch Revolt), had the effect of improving English trade with Spain during the 1630s, making Spain and the Spanish American territories to some extent, the most important overseas market for English goods. The treaty also allowed Dutch vessels into certain Spanish ports. Scarce on the market, RBH records only three sales of the title within the last 30 years, all the same copy as the present one.
