Publisher's cloth, pictorial dustjacket. Spine a little faded. Very fine. New York, Abrams, 1991. 4to. 30 x 23 cms. 344 pp. With 321 illustrations, including 170 plates in full colour. Index. (Publisher:) "Like Monet at his beloved Giverny, French Impressionist painter Gustave Caillebotte created a unique body of work celebrating his garden at Yerres. These splendid and luminous paintings, including many of Caillebotte's earlier works that were virtually unknown until recently, are reproduced here for the first time in more than 300 illustrations, including 170 color plates. The grounds at Yerres were laid out and planted according to the rigorous precepts of 19th-century French garden design. Caillebotte painted the estate often, recording precisely its plan and architectural elements as well as its magnificent flowers and plants. We are taken on an extensive tour of the estate at Yerres, stopping frequently to examine the design and gardening features involved in its creation and the paintings it inspired. Using documents of the period - principally the famous Treatise on the Composition and Ornamentation of Gardens by Audot - as well as photographs, diagrams, and landscape plans, Pierre Wittmer, a recognized Caillebotte scholar, examines the paintings and the garden, giving a complete picture of how the painter's eye was trained in a formal yet natural environment of his own creation. He explores as well the thematic and compositional relationships between the pictures made at Yerres and those Caillebotte painted in Paris. The text includes a complete survey of Caillebotte's known works, a chronology of the artist's life and career, and a detailed treatment of French garden design and practice during the latter half of the 19th century. A fascinating study of both painting and gardening, Caillebotte and His Garden at Yerres reveals the reciprocal influences so critical to Caillebotte's work as well as to the work of all the first generation of French Impressionists".

The fashion for the Chinese style was initiated, according to Harris, by Frederick, the Prince of Wales, who in 1749 had a "House of Confucius" built for him at Kew, as well as a Chinese barge with oarsman in Oriental costume to row him up and down the Thames. William Halfpenny was never a designer to miss his opportunity to exploit the latest fashion: "Halfpenny's role had never been to reform taste but to reduce it to practicable terms and disseminate it, as he said of his Chinese designs. 'to workmen at a distance from the Metropolis'. . The fact that these exotic [i.e., Chinese and Moorish] styles had no established rules must have made them especially attractive to the inventive, non-conforming William Halfpenny. The liberties he was able to take in altering , combining, and adapting them to British requirements were greater in degree but the same in principle as those he had taken with the Palladian idiom" (Harris, p. 221).
