[PENN, William] SOME FRUITS OF SOLITUDE, IN REFLECTIONS AND MAXIMS, RELATING TO THE CONDUCT OF HUMAN LIFE. IN TWO PARTS [BOUND IN ONE VOLUME]. Newport, RI: Printed by James Franklin, at the Town-School-House, 1749. Eighth edition. 12mo. [12], 158, [8] pp.; [6], 104, 107-108, [2] pp. Part One is complete save for a missing blank leaf at the end; but the second part lacks two text pages, pp. 105-106, and the last two leaves are only partially there. Only the top half of text pp. 107-8 and the index leaf are present. In a worn contemporary brown calf binding with rounded corners, scratches and nicks to all surfaces, whose hinges have been strengthened. The title-page and the partial leaves at the end of the volume (pp. 107-108 and the index leaf) have been mounted on archival paper and tipped in. Most pages have a few nicks and tiny chips to edges, not effecting text, and there is dampstaining to a good portion of some pages. Ink ownership of Abigail and Sarah Crandell to front pastedown: no date, but it looks contemporary with the text. Printed by James Franklin, nephew and apprentice of Benjamin Franklin at age 10 after the death of his father James Sr., the first printer in Rhode Island. (Evans 6392).

William Penn was an English Quaker leader and advocate of religious freedom, who oversaw the founding of the American Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a refuge for Quakers and other religious minorities of Europe. "Originally published in 1693, this profound volume of wise sayings was written by William Penn when the focus of the day was on observing moral principles for daily living. The vital collection of serene reflections were the product of Penn's life, faith, and Quaker heritage; one that would later involve his own suffering in prison and eventual poverty in living out his faith. The reader is challenged to apply these maxims to his or her own life, as well as to ponder deeply his or her significant place and purpose in God's world. Many of the principles and concepts that helped form a young American republic 50 years after Penn's death were inspired by his own revolutionary leadership of the lands of Pennsylvania."
