While officially on medical leave, James Bond uncovers a murderous plot by the "Union," a shadowy criminal syndicate determined to destroy SIS and kill its most famous agent. Ian Fleming: The Bibliography, page 613. See also Gilbert-Schøyen [370].

[Spy thriller] FIRST EDITION, ADVANCE COPY. Octavo (24 x 17cm), pp.274. Publisher's cloth with pictorial dust-wrapper. This is a pre-publication review-style copy, with Hodder's press release tucked in, SIGNED by the author above his name. Near fine in a slightly used jacket (press release is folded twice, else fine). Most uncommon; no British proofs were produced for Raymond Benson's James Bond novels, advance copies being issued instead. This copy is from the collection of Ian Fleming bibliographer Jon Gilbert, with his pencil note and signature to flyleaf.

Octavo. Original green wrappers, lettered in black. A near-fine copy, with minor creasing and marking to wrappers, fading to spine. Uncorrected proof copy of the first US edition, published simultaneously in the UK. No proof copies were issued in the UK for any of Benson's James Bond titles, with only a handful of proofs appearing in the US, making this one of the more elusive Benson items. This copy is from the significant Ian Fleming collection of Martin Schøyen (b.1940), with his bookplate. Schøyen's private collection of manuscripts, which span all cultures and all time periods, is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind. Gilbert, p. 613; The Schøyen Collection No. 371.
