Hardcover. First Edition. Autobiography and first book by one of our greatest songwriters, author of this country's unofficial national anthem, "This Land Is Your Land." This title, quite scarce in the first edition, especially in dustwrapper, served as the basis for the Hal Ashby film starring David Carradine. Bob Dylan, in his autobiography CHRONICLES, recounts reading BOUND FOR GLORY for the first time: "I went through it from cover to cover like a hurricane, totally focused on every word, and the book sang out to me like the radio. BOUND FOR GLORY is a hell of a book. It's huge. Almost too big." Small owner's address label on the front endpaper, gilt on the front cover and spine strong. The dustwrapper is bright and attractive free from any major defect but for a large chip at the head of the spine, extending to 1-3/4" at its deepest and obliterating nearly all of the title. Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper.

Cloth. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: good. Inscribed first edition, first printing of Bound for Glory by Woody Guthrie, in the second issue dust jacket. (illustrator). First Edition. Octavo, 428pp. Original black cloth, title in gilt on spine, gilt illustration on front cover. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page. Light wear to joints, front hinge starting. Solid text block, with a few short scratches to covers, small puncture to spine, and a touch of soiling to endpapers. Includes frontispiece portrait of the author. In the publisher's dust jacket, $3.00 retail price and "second printing" listed on front flap, small losses to corners and edges, light sunning to spine, vibrant illustrations. Housed in a custom blue half morocco clamshell case, title in gilt on spine with five raised bands. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "4-11-43 NYC / To whoever wins this Book - I hope you find enough fighting in here to at least prove to Hitler that we aint no nation of sissies. Woody Guthrie." Woody Guthrie (1912-1967) released his autobiography Bound for Glory at the age of 31, three years after his most famous song, "This Land is Your Land" debuted. Guthrie's inscription, explicitly referencing Hitler, reinforces his anti-fascist politics and songwriting throughout the war period. He was part of the folk-protest group The Almanac Singers, which kept utopian ideals and supported the working-class man. In June 1943, Guthrie joined the U.S. Merchant Marine and wrote songs in support of sailors and unions but was moved into the U.S. Army in 1945 due to his (unofficial, but highly suspected) affiliation with the Communist Party.

Erstausgabe
First edition, first printing, of the author's partially fictionalized autobiography. Guthrie (1912-1967) was one of the most significant figures in American folk music. Bob Dylan read Bound for Glory and quickly envisioned himself on the same path as the almost mythical "Dust Bowl Troubadour". At his New York stage debut, at Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village, Dylan told the crowd "I been travellin' around the country, followin' in Woody Guthrie's footsteps" (quoted in Smith). Guthrie's politically motivated and impassioned music (his guitar had a sticker that read: "This machine kills fascists") inspired much of Dylan's early work. He wrote "Song to Woody", which met with his hero's approval, and was one of only two original compositions on Dylan's self-titled 1962 debut album. In his review of Bound for Glory for the New Yorker, Clifton Fadiman commented: "some day people are going to wake up to the fact that Woody Guthrie and the ten thousand songs that leap and tumble off the strings of his music box are a national possession, like Yellowstone or Yosemite, and part of the best stuff this country has to show the world" (quoted in Londré, p. 105). Felicia Hardison Londré, Words at Play, 2005. Casper Llewellyn Smith, "Bob Dylan Visits Woody Guthrie", The Guardian, 16 June 2011. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, pictorial design on upper cover in gilt, top edge yellow, fore edge untrimmed. With dust jacket. With photographic portrait frontispiece and illustrations in the text by Guthrie. Spine ends gently bumped, gilt faded, hinges tender, prelims a little foxed, contents clean; jacket a little chipped with a few short closed tears, rear panel rubbed, flaps slightly foxed, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket.

Collection of five vintage studio still photographs from the 1976 film. With the stamp of a Canadian film distributor on the verso. Loosely based on Woody Guthrie's 1946 autobiography. Unsurprisingly, director Hal Ashby's version of Guthrie is a complex one, showing the legendary proletarian singer and activist as a man with contradictory virtues and faults. The film follows Guthrie's initial migration west to escape the dust bowl, his discovery of the plight of migrant workers, his important encounter with singer Ozark Bole, and his subsequent (and problematic) reunion with his family. Nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two, including Best Cinematography. Set and shot on location in Tucson, Arizona and throughout California. 10 x 8 inches. Near Fine.
