Erstausgabe
First edition, with an appealing provenance, from the library of the orientalist Edward Granville Browne, with his ownership inscription on the first blank and his neat pencil and red ink annotations to pp. 49-85. He appears to have used Socin's chrestomathia in the formative stages of his academic career to develop his impressive language skills. Browne's (1862-1926) lifelong fascination with Persia began in 1887 when, after being elected to a fellowship at Pembroke College, Cambridge, he spent a year travelling the country. "He visited Tabriz, Tehran, Esfahan, Shiraz, Yazd, and Kerman, avoiding European society as much as possible, and throwing himself with ever-increasing interest into the company of Persians, mystics, dervishes, and Kalandars, whose friendship and confidence he gained to a degree hitherto unparalleled" (ODNB). While away, he was appointed university lecturer in Persian, and in 1902 he was elected the Sir Thomas Adams Professor of Arabic. In his distinguished career, he wrote multiple books and articles, including his magnum opus, A Literary History of Persia, published in several volumes between 1902 and 1924. "His knowledge of the Persian language was unrivalled, and his reading covered the whole field of Persian and Arabic literature, and much of Ottoman too. No man of his generation did more to enhance Britain's contribution in this field of scholarship" (ibid.) Albert Socin (1844-1899) was an expert on oriental languages who published several books on Arabic and researched the geography and archaeology of the Near East, as well as its religious, art, and literary history. Octavo (183 x 125 mm). Contemporary half calf, professionally rebacked to style with the original spine laid down, marbled sides, brown morocco title labels lettered in gilt, compartments with decorative rolls, blue endpapers (renewed), top and bottom edges trimmed and sprinkled red, fore edge untrimmed. Tables in text. Ex-library copy, formerly in the University of Cambridge Oriental Faculty Library, with shelf numbers on spine, title page with inkstamp and shelf numbers, and several stamps internally. Worn overall, first and last few leaves foxed, else internally bright. A presentable, well-read copy.
