Benannt war die dominikanische Hauptstadt nach Diktator Dr. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo y Molina, den man damals "der Wohltäter" nannte oder "Vater des neuen Vaterlands" oder einfach nur "der Ziegenbock". Seit seiner Ermordung 1961 sind viele Jahre vergangen, und Urania, inzwischen 49 Jahre alt, hat in New York eine erfolgreiche Karriere als Juristin gemacht. Und da nennt sie eigentlich kaum jemand mehr Urania. Kurz vor der Ermordung des Ziegenbocks hatte die damals 14-jährige Heldin in Mario Vargas Llosas neuem Roman Das Fest des Ziegenbocks ihre Heimat verlassen. Nun ist sie zurückgekehrt, um ihren Vater Agustin Cabral, genannt "Cerebrito", zur Rede zu stellen. Immerhin war der unter Trujillo Minister und Senatspräsident, und fiel erst in den letzten Jahren des Regimes in Ungnade. Und dann sind da noch die anderen Opfer des zynischen Ziegenbocks, die plötzlich wieder eine Rolle spielen: darunter der ehemalige Leibwächter Amado García Guerero, der "der Leutnant" hieß und die große Liebe seines Lebens nicht heiraten durfte, weil sie die Schwester eines Oppositionellen war. Als makabren "Treuebeweis" musste er ihren Bruder erschießen -- und plante daraufhin Trujillos Ermordung mit. An Hand verschiedener Schicksale entwirft Vargas Llosa das überzeugende Panorama einer Diktatur, die Namen ebenso erfand wie auslöschte und im Zeichen des Fortschritts gnadenlos über Leichen ging: "Große Übel verlangen große Lösungen", lautete dabei die perverse Parole. Eindringlich kombiniert der peruanische Autor die Biografien von Günstlingen und Revolutionären zu einer Anklage gegen ein unmenschliches Regime -- und gibt nebenbei den Opfern literarisch ihre Identität zurück. März 1936 in Arequipa, Peru; seit 2011 Marqués de Vargas Llosa) ist ein peruanischer Schriftsteller, Politiker und Journalist, der seit 1993 auch die spanische Staatsbürgerschaft besitzt. Er ist einer der führenden lateinamerikanischen Romanciers und Essayisten. In den 1980er Jahren engagierte sich Vargas Llosa aktiv in der peruanischen Politik und wurde Vorsitzender einer neuen liberalen Partei. 1990 bewarb er sich als Kandidat eines Wahlbündnisses um das Amt des peruanischen Staatspräsidenten und galt lange als Favorit, verlor dann aber die Stichwahl gegen Alberto Fujimori. Er bezeichnete sich im Jahr 2001 als liberalen Demokraten". Mario Vargas Llosa wurde im Dezember 2010 mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet. Leben: Die Eltern von Mario Vargas Llosa, die sich schon vor seiner Geburt trennten, sind der Rundfunkjournalist Ernesto Vargas Maldonado und Dora Llosa Ureta. Seine Mutter entstammt einer aus Spanien stammenden Mittelschichtfamilie. Nicht zuletzt wegen ihrer schwierigen Situation als alleinstehende Mutter übersiedelte sie mit ihren Eltern und ihrem Sohn, als er ein Jahr alt war, nach Cochabamba in Bolivien. Dort verbrachte Vargas Llosa seine Kindheit, absolvierte die Grundschule am katholischen Colegio La Salle. Unter der Regierung von José Luis Bustamante y Rivero wurde sein Großvater mütterlicherseits Präfekt in der nordperuanischen Stadt Piura, weshalb sich die gesamte Familie dort niederließ. 1946 lernt er seinen Vater kennen, worauf er zusammen mit seiner Mutter zu ihm nach Lima zog. In Piura und Lima besuchte Vargas Llosa weiterhin Schulen der Salesianer Don Boscos, bevor er auf Betreiben seines Vaters für zwei Jahre an eine Militärschule in Callao wechselte. Das letzte Jahr seiner Schulausbildung verbrachte er wieder in Piura, wo er, wie bereits zuvor in Lima, nebenbei in der Redaktion einer Lokalzeitung mitarbeitete und sein erstes Theaterstück Die Flucht des Inka zur Aufführung brachte. Nach dem Schulabschluss begann Vargas Llosa in Lima gleichzeitig mit einem Jura- und Literaturstudium, wobei er nur letzteres abschloss. Seine schriftstellerische Betätigung nahm in dem Maße zu wie seine Tätigkeit als Journalist nachließ. In Lima heiratete er mit 19 Jahren Julia Urquidi Illanes, die um 10 Jahre ältere Schwester einer Schwägerin der Mutter. Die Ehe blieb kinderlos und wurde 1964 wieder geschieden. Mit dem Stipendium "Javier Prado" promovierte er in Philosophie und Literatur ab 1959 an der Universität Complutense Madrid. Im selben Jahr erhielt er für die Erzählungen Die Anführer den Leopoldo-Alas-Preis, ließ sich in Paris nieder und arbeitete zusammen mit seiner damaligen Frau für die französische Rundfunk- und Fernsehanstalt sowie als Journalist für die Nachrichtenagentur Agence France-Presse. Erstes Aufsehen als Schriftsteller erreichte Vargas Llosa mit dem Roman Die Stadt und die Hunde (La ciudad y los perros). 1965 heiratet er in Lima seine Cousine Patricia Llosa, die er an der Pariser Sorbonne kennen gelernt hatte und mit der er drei Kinder hat: Alvaro Vargas Llosa, Schriftsteller, Gonzalo und Morgana, Fotografin. Kurz nach der Heirat wechselte er mit seiner Frau nach Europa, wo er in Paris, London und Barcelona lebte. 1974 kehrte er nach Peru zurück und versuchte sich im Fernsehen als Leiter und Moderator eines politischen Programms. Von anfänglich linken Positionen distanzierte sich Llosa ab den 1960er Jahren. In den 1980er Jahren wandte sich Vargas Llosa der Politik zu, überraschte durch marktliberale Positionen, während die südamerikanischen Intellektuellen jener Zeit meist linksgerichtete Positionen bezogen. 1986 kritisierte er in Bezug auf Gabriel García Márquez die einseitige und kritiklose Überbewertung des sozialistischen Modells durch einige lateinamerikanische Intellektuelle mit folgenden Worten. The work is the result of a tremendous outpouring of work, talent, passion, and the willingness to push for change.
