Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This travelogue of lived experiences of the natural world, before and during the pandemic, comprises memoir extracts, stories, poems and e-mails. It is presented in inter-related, reflective narratives, both linear and fragmented, together with references to literature, music, art and film. Association and flights of fancy are used to explore the journeys of the mind in response to the sensory stimulants of the natural world; stimulants which may take us further into the natural world, or may unlock the imagination to take us somewhere else. In JOURNEYS the road is made by walking. Destinations are often unknown and outcomes uncertain. Process is more significant than product and the book turns on the idea of a reflective bricolage rather than rational argument and conclusions. The writer inhabiting nature, music in nature, and music as an art form, sits next to the myths and legends of storied landscapes, conceits of the mouth and the scallop shell, and concepts such as the pilgrim and the eclipse. The watchword of JOURNEYS as it moves from A Dream of Islands to Elysian Lockdown is empathy. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. If life is pilgrimage, Walking Papers are the pages - the notes on the journey, news of the world, letters of introduction and dismissal - found in one's breast-pocket amongst one's effects. And Thomas Lynch, the celebrated poet-undertaker is our guide through a world that's painfully aware of its own mortality; as he says in the powerfully moving title poem: 'Listen - /something's going to get you in the end./The numbers are fairly convincing on this,/hovering, as they do, around a hundred/percent. We die. And more's the pity.' In this, his fourth collection of poems - his first in the new century - Lynch attends to the flora and fauna and fellow pilgrims: dead poets and living masters, a former president and his factotums, a sin-eater and inseminator. Faux-bardic and mock-epic, deft at lament and lampoon, accusation and dispensation, fete and feint, Lynch's poems are powerful medicines, tonics for the long haul and home-going. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

It seemed as if the princes and princess would never know of their noble birth as they lived their lives quietly in their beautiful home, far away from the bustle and intrigue of the court. But the fates intervened. An Arabian Nights story of full of magic and mystique, jealousy, bravery and love. Urged by a travelling pilgrim, two brothers set out to find a talking bird, a singing tree and a never-ending fountain. When their sister learns that they have failed and are in danger, she sets out dressed as a man, conquers the mountain of black stone, rescues her brothers and obtains the bird, the tree, and the fountain. Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 'Whoever best acquits himself, and tells The most amusing and instructive tale, Shall have a dinner, paid for by us all.' In Chaucer's most ambitious poem, The Canterbury Tales (c. 1387), a group of pilgrims assembles in an inn just outside London and agree to entertain each other on the way to Canterbury by telling stories. The pilgrims come from all ranks of society, from the crusading Knight and burly Miller to the worldly Monk and lusty Wife of Bath. Their tales are as various as the tellers, including romance, bawdy comedy, beast fable, learned debate, parable, and Eastern adventure. The resulting collection gives us a set of characters so vivid that they have often been taken as portraits from real life, and a series of stories as hilarious in their comedy as they are affecting in their tragedy. Even after 600 years, their account of the human condition seems both fresh and true. This new edition of David Wright's acclaimed translation includes a new critical introduction and invaluable notes by a leading Chaucer scholar. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

But in remembering, "something has grown stout," and the poems reflect, in a final sequence about time spent in the teem and welter of India, a growing devotion to "the gold of busy and familiar day," and the distances closed by compassion, affection, and by poetry itself.
