"I put my Leica in a cupboard. Enough of lying in wait, pursuing, sometimes catching the essence of the black and the white, the knowledge where God is. I make films. Now I speak to the people in my viewfinder." (Robert Frank) "Robert Frank turned to filmmaking at the end of the 1950s. Although he has made 27 films, the work is largely a well kept secret. Frank approaches each film project as a new experience, challenging the medium and its possibilities at every turn. He has amalgamated documentary, fiction, and autobiography, cutting across genres. This book offers a visually unique approach to Frank's films: only new stills taken from videotapes have been used and they add up to a visual essay on Frank's cinema that establishes an engaging dialogue with his photographic work. Each film is introduced with detailed analysis, discussing the history and the aesthetics of Frank's film work. An interview with Allen Ginsberg provides an insider view. Together the texts and images offer an innovative and in-depth approach to the oeuvre of one of the greatest and most restless artists of the 20th century." Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - The retrospective presented by the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Bologna reflects the fact that Arnulf Rainers art is characterized primarily by series and sequences than by the single outstanding masterpiece. Committed to a kind of painting through which to "escape from painting", Rainer places no premium whatsoever on continuity of development. Werner Hofmann, surely one of the most knowledgeable critics of his art, focuses on discontinuity itself as an essential characteristic of this oeuvre, as an ever-present aspect of this painter's creative work. Rainer, he points out, does not intend to build a homogeneous, self-enclosed body of work but proceeds instead from a concept of perfection that he himself can never achieve. This idea of perfection is not embedded in an aesthetic ideology but rather in the context of religion and mysticism. The artist, says Rainer, sets the highest ideal standards for himself and for the spiritual system. Hofmann examines both of these spheres, that of icons, the expression of a purist methodology, and that of the integration of art in life, where life and art become one. The overpaintings are products of the urge toward sublimation, toward extreme concentration; the desire for spontaneous, rigorously direct recording of psychophysical events and actions leads the artist to explorations of body language, with all its numerous outgrowths and hybrid forms. | Nr. 7 | A Londres [recte Paris, ohne Drucker], 1815. 2 Bde. 18vo (134 x 78 mm). Vgl. Pia, Histoire d'un livre traque ... , in: Histoire de Dom B. (1960); Dies., Les livres de l'enfer, 572f.; Apollinaire, L'Enfer de la Bibliotheque Nationale (1919), 330f.; Rose I, 195f.; Bilderlexikon III, 437f.; Hayn/Gotendorf III, 579; P. Englisch, Geschichte der erotischen Literatur, 389f.; Brulotte/Phillips, Encyclopedia of Erotic Literature I, 544f.; Darnton, Philosophical Sex ... , in: Micale/Dietle, Enlightenment, Passion, Modernity (2000), 106f. One of the most amusing and witty works in Frencht erotic literature, "the greatest and most outrageous of all the books in the Enfer" (Robert Darnton), which along with Therese philosophe dominated the bestseller lists until the end of the Old Regime. First published in 1742 as Histoire de Dom B****, portier des Chartreux, its most charmingly illustrated edition was printed by Cazin at Paris in 1787, of which only a very few copies are known. The present edition is a reissue of that Cazin print praised for the correctnes of its text. Written in the first person it narrates humorously and witty the salcious life of the monk Saturnin. Each episode tops the previous one, until all inhibition seems to be destroyed. In the end Saturnin is hosted in a Carthusian monastary where he, exempt from all high passions, is awaiting his death, without fearing or desiring it. As epitaph to his tomb he wishes the words in Latin: "Hic situs est Dom Bougre, fututus, futuit". The astounding story by the French novelist and advocat to the Parliament of Paris, Gervaise de Latouche, "deserves a place beside Manon Lescaut and La Nouvelle Heloise. In it, eroticism is swallowed up in asceticism, pornography in religiosity" (Robert Darnton). Among the intellectuals who read and esteemed the book was the German mathematician, astromoner, and satirical writer Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799) who alludes the title in his famous aphorisms and in a letter to his friend Johann Christian Dietrich calling it: 'A witty albeit dirty book'. - Gervaise de Latouche's presumed authorship for other erotic novels remains uncertain. - Half-title, title and last two, three leaves heavily browned, else an excellent copy. - Contemporary marbled calf, triple gilt fillets around sides, spines gilt with label, gilt inside dentelles, all edges gilt. This villain is much more dangerous than Cinthio's. He not only betrays the Moor and the Captain (Cassio); he injures everyone in his vicinity. How can so evil a man be plausible? How can he win the confidence of so apparently noble a man as Othello? And more important, what is his motivation? Why should any man hurt others so much? Is he simply a dramatic mechanism? A symbol of the devil? The devil himself? Or is he in fact a good man who has been provoked to revenge by wrongs done him? Was he unfairly denied promotion by Othello? Cuckolded by him? By Cassio? Finally, how can a character who does so much wrong involve audiences so deeply in his fate? The controversy has produced many different views and, rereading them, one could get the impression that Iago has become a real person with real traits of character and that he is responsible for what he has "done", and some critics withdraw more and more from the original text. Therefore any consideration of Iago's or any other character refers to his "character" as a stage personage in Shakespeare's Othello. After seeing the bulk of literature written on the character of Iago, one tends to agree with Adamson:So many critics over the years have made so much sense (not to mention nonsense) of Iago that one naturally hesitates to dig over the plot again.Criticism on Othello is very diverse. Following are a few examples of the manifold interpretations of Iago's character. Aus dem Besitz der Gräfin Ledebur mit geprägtem Monogramm (Krone) auf dem Vorsatz. Guter Zustand. Hughes does not write with a researcher's smug wisdom-after-the-event but with an artist's power of recording the past as if it were the living present The long passages on the Munich beer-hall putsch of 1923, Hitler's escape, hiding and capture are a tour de force of dreamlike action.- Time. - The Fox in the Attic is a 1961 novel by Richard Hughes, who is best known for A High Wind in Jamaica. It was the first novel in his unfinished The Human Predicament trilogy.[1] Plot summary: The novel opens in 1923. The protagonist, a young Welsh aristocrat named Augustine Penry-Herbert, discovers the body of a young girl and is incorrectly suspected of having something to do with her accidental death. Augustine decides to leave England and visit distant relations in Germany. He falls in love with his cousin Mitzi amidst the rise of Nazism, including the Munich Putsch. At the end of the novel, Mitzi, who has lost her sight, enters a convent and Augustine returns to England. Background: Richard Hughes was cadet in training when the 1918 armistice was signed and spent World War II as an Admiralty bureaucrat; it was this experience that caused him to write The Human Predicament.[2] In order to adequately mix his fictional characters with historical figures, Hughes relied on firsthand accounts and family papers from German relatives and friends, including distant relation Baroness Pia von Aretin (whom he acknowledges in the 1961 US edition of the novel) and Helene Hanfstaengl, who had been a friend of Hitler's in the early 1920s.[2][3][4] Hughes also gives an explanation for his unconventional description of the Munich Putsch saying that his narrative "is based on a vivid contemporary account by an actual Nazi participant, a Major Goetz. This account was contained in a letter to a friend dated 26th November, 1923, which some weeks later found its way into the German press."[3] ... Reception: The Fox in the Attic was featured in the February 2, 1962 Life Guide section of Life Magazine.[7] In this short blurb, Life introduced Hughes's attempt to write The Human Predicament trilogy, calling it a "vast, Tolstoyan novel sequence" while also saying of the first volume, "Hughes effectively interweaves the life of his hero...with the fortunes of top Nazidom." ... | Nr. 10 | Rare Portrait!
Thunberg, who was born at Jönköping in Sweden, studied medicine at Uppsala University, graduating in 1770. While there he went on botanical collecting trips for his teacher Linnaeus. After a year's study in Paris he accepted an invitation to make a plant-collecting trip aboard a Dutch merchant ship bound for Japan. By April 1772 Thunberg had completed the first stage of the journey with his arrival in Cape Town, South Africa. He remained there for three years, during which time he made three excursions into the interior on which he collected over 3000 species of plants. About a third of these were new to science. On two of his trips he was accompanied by the British plant collector Francis Masson.
In March 1775 Thunberg sailed on to Japan, arriving at Nagasaki in August. Restrictions imposed on the movements of foreigners at that time prevented him from making long botanical excursions. However, with the aid of some young Japanese physicians whom the traders employed as interpreters, Thunberg was able to obtain species of Japanese plants in exchange for his knowledge of modern European medicine. In December 1776 he left Japan and visited Java, Colombo (Sri Lanka), Cape Town, and London before reaching Sweden in March 1779. On his return Thunberg took up his appointment as botanical demonstrator at Uppsala University and in 1784 he succeeded Carl von Linne (the younger) as professor of botany, a post he held until his death.
Thunberg's time as professor was mainly occupied with writing about his extensive collections. In 1784 he published his Flora Japonica, describing 21 new genera and several hundred new species of Japanese plants. His works on floras of the Cape colony include Prodromus Plantarum Capensis (1794-1800; Foreword to the Plants of the Cape) and the more important Flora Capensis (1807-23; Flowers of the Cape), completed with the help of the German botanist Joseph Schultes. His shorter works include writings on Protea, Oxalis, Ixia, and Gladiolus. -cf. A Dictionary of Scientists, Oxford University Press
"Thunberg accompanied the chief of the Dutch trade office on his trip to Edo, which gave Japanese Scientists an opportunity to meet with him. Among those who visited him in Edo were two physicians who worked on the translation of A New Book of Anatomy, Katsuragawa Hoshu, the shogun's physician, and Nakagawa Jun'an, who served the same lord as Genpaku. Of these physicians Thunberg wrote, "the two physicians at court, my much beloved pupils, who visited me almost every day, had, through my assiduous pains, and their own unwearied endeavors, made considerable advances in the science." Hoshu, on his part, commented about Thunberg that he had never met a man with so much deep knowledge of such a wide range of academic subjects. There was a remarkable difference in the Japanese attitude toward European scientists at that time compared with the time of Kaempfer's stay in Japan.
Hoshu and Jun'an maintained communication with Thunberg even after his return home, and some of the letters they wrote to him are kept in the University of Uppsala. Several years ago, when I visited the university, I saw these letters and was deeply moved by the thought that so many years before, even during the time of national seclusion, communication had been maintained in this way between the Japanese and Swedish scientists.
As Genpaku wrote with great pleasure in The Beginning of Dutch Learning, major advances were made in the early nineteenth century as more and more books in various fields of European science were published. However, it was difficult to learn European science solely from books, and there were few Europeans in Japan to teach it." | Nr. 12 | [- francais, histoire -] Paris, Delaunay, 1707. 168 (2) pages, incl. first and last blank; woodcut-heapiece at first textpage. - Original-full-leather binding of the period over 4 raised bands; 12mo.(ca. 14 x 8 cm). 1st edition of the rare, anonymously published book. The fragmentary existence of the spine leather may be a consequence of its apparent travel through 18th-century Europe: the titlepage bears a hungarian episcopal juridical college-stamp which is matched by a manuscript hungarian entry at the inner frontpanel; the front flyleaf verso arries the manuscript proverb ''on pend les petits larron, mais aux grand on fait pardon.'' [german: 'Die Kleinen hängt man, die Großen lässt man laufen']; the text is enriched with quite some lines and german translations in the white margin; rear flylef verso with manuscript 'Vincentius Fabricius (1612-1667)'-quote ''Si tamen, ut pereas, superi voluere, ratumque est; Tutius est superos, et pia fata sequi.''[see V. F.: 'Orationes Civiles'(Frankfurt/M., 1685)]. If he had not died before the book here offered was published, one might have concluded the it was his copy. - However: many eighteenth-century users marks and traces; panels and upper corners somewhat rubbed, spine-leather only fragmentary (ca. 60%), binding intact and tight; A very good copy. | Nr. 13 | GRIN Verlag,Mai 2011 ISBN 9783640904969 NEUBUCH! 211x147x15 mm; 11001,1.. Aufl. Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, printed single-sided, grade: 1,0, University of Dusseldorf 'Heinrich Heine' (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Elizabethan Stage Villains - Shakespeare and Marlowe, language: English, abstract: Marlowe s Jew of Malta is a most puzzling play in different respects. Firstly, there is the question of its genre: It is the one play of Marlowe s that strains most obviously against its apparent classification as a tragedy. Secondly, there are many different readings of the play. Is The Jew of Malta analogically a serious farce , a comedy of evil , a tragic farce or plainly an ambiguous sort of drama 3 Furthermore, a question which has often been raised, is, whether the text we have today is corrupt, and if it was written by someone else from the second act onwards. The reason behind all those questions and the play s ambiguity seems to be the protagonist Barabas. His character, one could argue, is not easy to analyze, nor is his motivation or disposition, as this is what was the focus of analysis in the past. The difficulty in explaining this character might result from different common suggestions what kind of protagonist he is or what his dramatic function might be respectively. Thus Barabas is a conglomerate of stereotypes - as Jew, devil, Machiavel, and a dramatic persona fulfilling different narrative and conventional functions - as villain, Vice and protagonist, etc. The three most frequent characterizations are to be considered: the Vice figure, the stereotyped Jew and the stage Machiavel. While the Vice and the stereotyped Jewishness are often mentioned merely as aspects of Barabas s character, the Machiavellian is the most common and distinctive interpretation. For the sake of completeness the aspect of Machiavellianism is discussed very briefly in chapter 2, but a more detailed discussion of the topic follows in part 3 and 4 of this paper. It will be analyzed in the following respects: the stage Machiavel, Marlowe s use of Machiavelli as a dramatis persona in the prologue, and the influence of Machiavelli s writings on The Jew of Malta respectively. A closer examination of the cultural background of Elizabethan thought and the life and works of the person Niccolo Machiavelli has to precede these considerations. A literary work is always part of its cultural background, and it is at least debatable whether it is valid to apply today s standards to a drama written in Elizabethan times.A textual analysis of the prologue which I regard as being essential for my argument will follow this necessary consideration of the background.
