Als Hülfsmittel zur Sichtbarmachung der Nerven in fibrösen Membranen dient am besten die von Burdach j. [d. i. Ernst Burdach, 1801-1876] zuerst angeordnete Essigsäure. Mit diesem Hilfsmittel hab ich auch allenthalben in der Dura selbständige Nervenfäden aufgefunden und hoffe sie noch in allen fibr[ösen] u serös[en] Membranen zu finden; woraus dann hervorgienge, daß das Nervensystem als Wächter des Organismus in allen Grenzgebieten sich verbreitet, was ganz natürlich wäre. In Ihrer Physiologie hat mich besonders die mir auch schon lange geläufige Idee des psychischen Organismus überrascht [...]". - Jan Evangelista Purkyni entdeckte u. a. das Flimmerepithel, die Ganglienzellen im Kleinhirn und schuf außerdem den Begriff des "Protoplasma". Presentation copy from the Russian scientist Nekrasov.Vladimir Bekhterev (1857-1927), the prolific neurologist and social psychologist, studied at the Military Medical Academy of St. Petersburg the same time as Pavlov, obtaining his doctorate in 1881 and returning in 1893 as a professor of psychic and nervous diseases. Among his many accomplishments, he founded the first experimental psychology laboratory at the University of Kazan in 1885 and the Psychoneurological Institute in 1908, which has since been renamed in his honour. He described the large bundles of the brain stem and the pia mater nodes of the base of the brains; studied and described the reticular formation in 1885, and established the precise location of the taste centre within the brain cortex in 1900. He has been eponymously recognised by having several brain structures, such as "Bechterev's Nucleus," named after him.

Rare Portrait!<br>Thunberg, who was born at Jönköping in Sweden, studied medicine at Uppsala University, graduating in 1770. While there he went on botanical collecting trips for his teacher Linnaeus. After a year's study in Paris he accepted an invitation to make a plant-collecting trip aboard a Dutch merchant ship bound for Japan. By April 1772 Thunberg had completed the first stage of the journey with his arrival in Cape Town, South Africa. He remained there for three years, during which time he made three excursions into the interior on which he collected over 3000 species of plants. About a third of these were new to science. On two of his trips he was accompanied by the British plant collector Francis Masson.<br>In March 1775 Thunberg sailed on to Japan, arriving at Nagasaki in August. Restrictions imposed on the movements of foreigners at that time prevented him from making long botanical excursions. However, with the aid of some young Japanese physicians whom the traders employed as interpreters, Thunberg was able to obtain species of Japanese plants in exchange for his knowledge of modern European medicine. In December 1776 he left Japan and visited Java, Colombo (Sri Lanka), Cape Town, and London before reaching Sweden in March 1779. On his return Thunberg took up his appointment as botanical demonstrator at Uppsala University and in 1784 he succeeded Carl von Linne (the younger) as professor of botany, a post he held until his death.<br>Thunberg's time as professor was mainly occupied with writing about his extensive collections. In 1784 he published his Flora Japonica, describing 21 new genera and several hundred new species of Japanese plants. His works on floras of the Cape colony include Prodromus Plantarum Capensis (1794-1800; Foreword to the Plants of the Cape) and the more important Flora Capensis (1807-23; Flowers of the Cape), completed with the help of the German botanist Joseph Schultes. His shorter works include writings on Protea, Oxalis, Ixia, and Gladiolus. -cf. Among those who visited him in Edo were two physicians who worked on the translation of A New Book of Anatomy, Katsuragawa Hoshu, the shogun's physician, and Nakagawa Jun'an, who served the same lord as Genpaku. Of these physicians Thunberg wrote, "the two physicians at court, my much beloved pupils, who visited me almost every day, had, through my assiduous pains, and their own unwearied endeavors, made considerable advances in the science." Hoshu, on his part, commented about Thunberg that he had never met a man with so much deep knowledge of such a wide range of academic subjects. There was a remarkable difference in the Japanese attitude toward European scientists at that time compared with the time of Kaempfer's stay in Japan.<br>Hoshu and Jun'an maintained communication with Thunberg even after his return home, and some of the letters they wrote to him are kept in the University of Uppsala. Several years ago, when I visited the university, I saw these letters and was deeply moved by the thought that so many years before, even during the time of national seclusion, communication had been maintained in this way between the Japanese and Swedish scientists.<br> As Genpaku wrote with great pleasure in The Beginning of Dutch Learning, major advances were made in the early nineteenth century as more and more books in various fields of European science were published. However, it was difficult to learn European science solely from books, and there were few Europeans in Japan to teach it." Emperor Akihito<br><br>Unter den europäischen Ärzten, welche als Gesandtschaftsärzte nach Japan kamen und einen Einfluss auf den Fortschritt in der japanischen Medizin zu jener Zeit gewannen, sind in erster Linie zu nennen - Karl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828). Im 4. Jahre der An-ei-Ära (1775 nach Chr.) kam er als Arzt zur holländischen Gesandtschaft nach Nagasaki und unterrichtete, gleichweise seine Vorgänger, die Dolmetscher in der europäischen Heilkunde. Seine damaligen klinischen Vorlesungen hat Kogyu Yoshio, der berühmteste Schüler Thunbergs, gesammelt und später unter den Titeln Komo Hijiki, Thunberg-Kuden und Komo Komoryu Koyakuho publiziert. Im Jahre 1776 begleitete Thunberg die holländischen Gesandten nach Yedo, und hier unterrichtete er auch einige Japanische Ärzte in der europäischen Heilkunde. Von seinen Schülern in Yedo seien zunächst genannt: Hoshu Katsuragawa (der Leibarzt des Shoguns) und Junan Nkagawa. Die beiden letzteren waren die Übersetzer und damit die Begründer der sogenannten Rangaku. - cf. The fragmentary existence of the spine leather may be a consequence of its apparent travel through 18th-century Europe: the titlepage bears a hungarian episcopal juridical college-stamp which is matched by a manuscript hungarian entry at the inner frontpanel; the front flyleaf verso arries the manuscript proverb ''on pend les petits larron, mais aux grand on fait pardon.'' [german: 'Die Kleinen hängt man, die Großen lässt man laufen']; the text is enriched with quite some lines and german translations in the white margin; rear flylef verso with manuscript 'Vincentius Fabricius (1612-1667)'-quote ''Si tamen, ut pereas, superi voluere, ratumque est; Tutius est superos, et pia fata sequi.''[see V. F.: 'Orationes Civiles'(Frankfurt/M., 1685)]. If he had not died before the book here offered was published, one might have concluded the it was his copy. - However: many eighteenth-century users marks and traces; panels and upper corners somewhat rubbed, spine-leather only fragmentary (ca. 60%), binding intact and tight; A very good copy.
