Broschur. Zustand: Gut. x, 254 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). -- Minor dirt residues on its cuts, otherwise in very good condition. -- Lines of Authority is an essay in literary history and critical reading. I have tried to describe a historical moment in ways that allow us to read its politics and literature together. My theme is partisanship as the grounding of politics and culture, the defining condition, in the middle and later decades of the seventeenth century, not only of political action but of writing and reading. This book is not, however, a narrative of influence but an argument about the role of polemic in the imagination. As cultural historians of various persuasions classical Marxists, new historicists, cultural materialists have urged, literary texts at once reflect and enact history. Of course, literature represents politics in a number of ways, and symbolic representation belongs variously to the categories of the political and the aesthetic. Here I have tried to argue the shaping force of politics in literature while addressing the capacities of literature not only to engage the realm of political thought but to engage in political action. Such work blurs the categories of politics and aesthetics. But for those who witnessed on January 30, 1649, the execution of Charles I and the next day contemplated the gestures of aesthetics and eternity on the pages of the Eikon Basilike, or reflected on the life of Charles I as a series of representations, could the relations between politics and aesthetics have been stable and distinct? For those who meditated on retreat and sociability in the pastoral shades of The Compleat Angler or considered, in the midst of national humiliation and metropolitan calamity, the civic import of innocence and corruption in The Last Instructions, the tangled relations between politics and aesthetics must have remained close to the center of their experience.
