Magazin / Zeitschrift
Magazine. Zustand: Very Good+. Illustrated by (cover photo) John Derek (illustrator). (Vol. 3, No. 5). [modest wear along spine, very slight bend at top right corner]. (B&W photographs) A remarkably rich issue of this always-interesting periodical, which tried (with mixed success) to be both a serious (albeit artsy) "cinema journal" and an industry-hip-newsy-insider entertainment publication. (Many of its contributors -- notably editor Curtis Lee Hanson, who later dropped the "Lee" -- went on to successful filmmaking careers.) This issue kicks off with an editorial comment that proved to be prescient and certainly demonstrated the magazine's "insider" cred: the statement that BONNIE AND CLYDE -- then only in rough-cut form, lacking a music score and second-unit scenes -- was "the most significant American movie in years." The magazine then proceeds to put its page-count where its mouth is, devoting a three-part feature story to the film: an on-location report of its production (by future Oscar-winning screenwriter Robert Towne, no less), plus interviews with star/producer Warren Beatty and director Arthur Penn (both conducted by Hanson). And also in this issue: a special feature on director William Wyler (who was just about to embark on his final directorial effort, FUNNY GIRL), consisting of an interview and a film-by-film commentary on his entire filmography, both by Hanson also. Not enough yet? How about: a preview (by L.M. Kit Carson) of the upcoming D.A. Pennebaker documentary about Bob Dylan, DONT LOOK BACK, and a nice little tribute to Errol Flynn, "Requiem for a Swashbuckler." All this, and more, in a 50-page magazine -- the only weak point of which, that I can see, is the sappy soft-focus wrap-around cover photo, by actor-turned-photographer-and-middle-aged lecher John Derek.

Two vintage studio still photographs from the 1936 film. Based on Lillian Hellman's 1934 play, "The Children's Hour." The story follows two school teachers whose small school suddenly loses enrollment when a student lies about one professor having an affair with the other's fiance. The film is based on a play by Lillian Hellman, in which the female professors are accused of having a lesbian relationship. When asked to adapt her play for the screen, she was forced to change the plot and erase any lesbian implications to appease the exceedingly strict Hays Code. The film was well received, and Hellman was widely commended for her writing. Costar Bonita Granville was nominated for an Academy Award for her role. Shot on location in California. 10 x 8 inches. Near Fine.

Vintage press photograph of Frank Capra, William Wyler, George Stevens, and Samuel J. Briskin announcing the formation of the independent motion picture production company Liberty Films. French annotations in manuscript ink and pencil on verso. Frank Capra, dissatisfied with the Hollywood studio system, had attempted to set up an independent production studio on three occasions, in 1939, forming Frank Capra Productions (which produced "Meet John Doe" [1941]), which dissolved when Capra joined the US Army Signal Corps in late 1941, and later during the war sought a partnership, unsuccessfully, with director Leo McCarey. In 1945 Capra teamed up with Samuel J. Briskin, then production chief at Columbia Pictures, and formed Liberty Films, and within a few months of incorporating, directors William Wyler and George Stevens joined as partners. Liberty Films only ended up producing two films, both directed by Capra, the now classic "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), which at the time was a financial failure, and couldn't recoup its high production costs, and "State of the Union" (1948), which required Liberty Films to pay for use of MGM's production facilities as well as a percentage of the distribution fee, as the lead, Spencer Tracy, was under contract to MGM. Under threat of bank foreclosure, Liberty Films was purchased by Paramount Pictures in May, 1947. 10 x 8 inches. Very Good plus, with light creasing at a few of the white borders.
