  • Zustand: Used - Good. 1901. Hardcover. Cloth, no dj. 8vo.xxv + 408 pp. 65 illustrations and two maps. Pictorial brown cloth with gilt lettering on front board and spine. Significant dampstaining and scuffing across boards and spine, heavily so at edges of front board. Hinges starting. Expected age-toning to pages, but still clean and bright. Newspaper clipping of book review pasted in on ffep, with browning to paste down opposite as a result. Despite these flaws, a sound and handsome volume in good condition. Good.

Sole edition, print run of 150, of this detailed reconnaissance. Classified "Confidential" and, according to the official notifications to the front board, remaining the property of the Government of India. Issued for "personal information" only, this copy was transmitted to a Lieut, Walshe, who evidently failed to return it to the Intelligence Department, Simla "when no longer required". A single listing on WorldCat, Royal Botanic Gardens. Meticulous officer's report of a trek of 1618 miles "the greater part of which was through unexplored country" (Preface). It includes watering places, results from daily barometer and thermometer readings, the tribal limits of various clans encountered, and "a list of some of the trees and bushes, with their native uses". Wellby (1866-1900), 18th Hussars, was accompanied by Lieut. Ralph Ward-Jackson (1871-1921), 11th Hussars, with "38 camels and 28 men, of whom 20 were armed with Snider carbines, and carried over 100 days' rations for all". The purpose of the expedition is clear, being made at a time when the British were consolidating the position of their regional protectorate as a source of essential supplies for the British Indian foothold in Aden. They had no interest in establishing a full colonial administration, their aims extending solely to a "coast colony"; maintaining order on the coast and offering protection to the caravan routes in the interior, to "secure a supply market, check the traffic in slaves, and to exclude the interference of foreign powers" (Samatar p. 31). Clearly a highly talented intelligence officer, Wellby subsequently made trips into Tibet and across Ethiopia to Egypt, which were published to popular and critical acclaim as Through Unknown Tibet (1898) and 'Twixt Sirdar and Menelik (1901). His mapmaking skills in respect to the latter expedition were celebrated in the British Library blog 9 November 2017, "Captain Wellby and his 1,000-mile march". Following his Ethiopian exploits Captain Wellby joined his regiment in the Second Anglo-Boer War and was with them throughout the Siege of Ladysmith, being deployed on Waggon Hill during the great attack on 6 January 1900. He was wounded in action at Marzicht later that year and died of his wounds at Paardeburg. The extraordinarily detailed map, also stamped "Confidential", plots the party's circular route out of Berbera on the Gulf of Aden, south east across the interior, east towards the Indian Ocean coast before sweeping west and then north back to their start point. Wellby fixed his positions "by taking latitudes with the theodolite, and taking careful bearings to fixed positions as much as possible". The map carries indications of the presence of tribal groups, and succinct notes as to terrain, availability of grazing, water and so forth; the report itself is divided into two sections, a diary style account which recounts general conditions and intelligence gathered from encounters with the inhabitants, and the road report which gives distances between points, cumulative mileage, journey time, and road/trail conditions. These reports were produced in very small numbers to be consulted purely on a "need to know" basis. The printed labels to the front board make clear the restricted nature of circulation, the report would not appear in the annual returns, remained government property belonging to the Library of the Office of the Adjutant General in India, was not to be quoted in "any but confidential communications", and as explained by an additional rubber stamp, was to be returned to the Intelligence Branch at Simla. Abdi Ismail Samatar, The State and Rural Transformation in Northern Somalia, 1884 1986, 1996. Folio. Original strong blue cloth-backed very light blue printed paper-covered boards. Large folding, engraved 1 inch - 16 mile scale route map (1000 x 675 mm) in cloth-gusseted pocket to the front board, double-page genealogical table and a number of small sketches and diagrams in the text. A little rubbed and soiled, some light browning to the contents and a few small stains, but overall very good.
